SquareMeal Review of The Pepys

Diarist Samuel Pepys would have been familiar with the notorious address of this riverside hostelry. In the 1600s, boatmen ferried libertines from here to Bankside ‘stews’ (bordellos) opposite. Today the former warehouse’s windows afford fine views of The Shard, while its bright, washed-brick interior owes much to the classic noughties wine bar. Chilean Sauvignon and Merlot head a dozen wines by the glass (from £4), and the list of £8.50 cocktails includes lychee and rose Martini and a smooth Woodford Reserve maple-syrup Old Fashioned. To eat, snack on lemon pepper squid, Scotch egg, or lamb meatballs with tzatziki; share a meat or vegetarian platter; or tuck in to the lunch/supper menu. Here, mushroom and Stilton quiche, or more hearty braised pig’s cheeks, might launch proceedings, followed by equally robust wild boar bangers and mash, or roast sea bass with green-vegetable risotto. Pepys would doubtless fancy the puds: tart, anyone?

Waste of time and money.
This “culinary” experience plumbed an new low for us in 40+ years of dining out. Our meal was under-cooked. We were offered a limp apology and a free cocktail. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.

We were fortunate enough to book the Samuel Pepys for the Jubilee Pagent. It was fantastic value for money compared to lots of other London restaurants on Thames that day. The food was great, exceeded our expectations and the service amazing. Abbie from enquiry to booking to the event was very friendly and welcoming, a great asset to the Samual Pepys. All her staff that we came into contact that day could not have been nicer or more helpful. The pub is in a fantastic location with a balcony giving amazing views of the Thames. We will definitely go back.

Dreadful! Do not waste your time or money. Poor quality food, cooked with absolutely no effort or imagination. Red wine was actually warm! Couldn't even be bothered to do one of our table a vodka martini – despite it being on their drinks menu. Really really bad.
