SquareMeal Review of The Queens Arms - Warwick Way

This amiable boozer has all bases covered with a decent showing of British grub & a changing array of real ales. Set over two floors with a picturesque wood-panelled upstairs dining room, the QA is something of a neighbourhood oasis for astute pub-goers. Meantime London Lager, Bitburger & a constantly evolving roster of well-kept cask beers (Atlantic IPA, for example), keep drinkers happy, while foodies can content themselves with tried-&-tested favourites running from deep-fried whitebait with rocket & garlic mayonnaise to salmon fillet with Jersey Royals. Burgers, steaks & bangers abound, & you’d be hard-pressed to find a better local deal at lunchtime, when £5.50 might pay for roast chicken with pancetta, mash & peas. It’s all very snappy: ‘order, eat & carry on drinking’, advises one fan.

Faced with a visit from my mum, flying in from East Scotland, I wanted to find a bar/foody place near to Victoria, that wasn't a dive. I found the Queen's Arms to be exactly what was needed. Very friendly and helpful staff. Food was just quick and tasty, and priced about right – awesome spicy prawn dish ( although make sure you order the burger well done to overdone, or it will come a too bit pink for most tastes ). Other bars take note, and get your heads out of your backsides. You don't go to the pub to fanny about! Order – eat – carry on drinking. The beers and ales were all fine, and service was prompt and attentive. The atmosphere was good, despite it being a quiet evening in there by their standards. The music stayed at a volume where conversation was never challenged, but the background was lively. Comfy tables and chairs, and clean toilets rounded it all off. At the end of the day, we'd come back here if in the area. And that's more than can be said for all the other places we've dropped into around Victoria. This was a really pleasant surprise. Cheers.

The Queen's Arms is worth an honorable mention in that it is part of a dying breed. A friendly unpretentious pub doing simple food well. You won't find foie gras paired with cactus pear here, but neither would you want to. Can be relied on for consistently producing a fresh steak cooked as requested or crispy, tasty beer battered haddock without having to pay over the odds. Desserts are typically english but punching above their weight for price. A good place to go when too lazy to turn the stove on.

Friendly, interested, helpful staff. We were happy to pay the 12.5% service charge. I live local, and we went in to try their lunch menu. We plan on returning for dinner.
