SquareMeal Review of The Potting Shed at Dorset Square Hotel

Now that the Dorset Square Hotel has returned to the Firmdale fold, The Potting Shed restaurant has once more put down roots in its sky-lit basement. True to the name, expect terracotta pots, garden ornaments and thick oak tables, smartened up with of-the-moment brasserie furnishings. Pictures of cricketers reference Dorset Square’s heritage as the original site of Lord’s Cricket Ground, while the menu compensates for any lack of surprises with bills that are extremely modest for Marylebone. Braised leek hearts with shellfish and a leek broth delights at £8.75, venison cottage pie is a snip at £18.50, and puds such as beetroot and chocolate cake with sour cherries and Chantilly crème fraîche or buttermilk pannacotta are even better value at £6. Complimentary post-meal sorbets are another generous touch. Service is engaging and there’s a complete lack of pretence about the whole place.

Very nice Lunch venue, with a down to earth menu. Nice Bar area and Bar snacks. Natural light gets right through although it is in a basement.

Excellent food - great location
Had a fabulous business meal, with attentive service - restaurant packed, so great atmosphere. Interesting menu, and good wine cellar & cocktails. Nice people.

great addition to Marylebone area
Have visited The Potting Shed several times and it is consistently of a high standard, in both food and service. Fairly traditional menu is strong on flavour and while not cheap, offers reasonably good value.

Finding decent restaurants in the middle of ‘tourist-central’ is not easy. Using Square Meal guide and just two diner reviews, booked the Potting Shed and what a surprise. It is in the basement of the Dorset Square Hotel, restaurant signage not great on street, but given excellent welcome and shown to restaurant by hotel staff. Tables for two are a bit dinky, but adequate. Menu is simple in a good way with sufficient choice. Then the real surprise. Made safe choice of battered cod, chips and pea purée expecting it to taste like dozens of versions eaten across the capital. The batter was absolutely outstanding, perfectly crisp, perfectly seasoned and for once, perfectly complementing rather than smothering the fish. Dish of the day was sole, again, very well cooked and presented but no side vegetables offered with dish. Always irritated by charges for side orders – price at least one into the food. Cheese plate was a bit sparse but remedied by staff. Wine at top end of reasonably priced. Service excellent and the sorbets very good. All in all – a real find and would highly recommend.

Hidden gem - recommended
When I booked this, I had no idea that I walked past it every day on my way to work! Three ladies going out for an evening meal, we had a wonderful time, starting with sublime cocktails, and then working our way though 3 courses and a great bottle of wine. The ambience is very pleasant, staff very friendly and the quality of the food very high. Will definitely be going again.
