SquareMeal Review of The Botanist on the Green

An ideal refuelling stop after a visit to the neighbouring Gardens, or for watchers of summer cricket matches on the green, this huge bar-brasserie is comfortable, unpretentious & good looking. Helpful, cheerful staff set a gentle tone for what otherwise could become a rowdy drinking hole. The kitchen team takes a strong line of social responsibility: air freighting & the like are banned, & food miles & suppliers are published. However, there’s little else that’s exceptional about the menu; expect the normal array of steaks, sea bass, bangers & sharing boards – all competently delivered & reasonably well-prepared. Staff are friendly to children & serve a good Sunday roast. The place can get quite lively at weekends when local families come out to play.

End of lockdown part 2 The sequel day1

Been really missing going out. Visited for a meal & drinks. As a starter had the sticky Asian chicken...

well what can I say I had so many taste buds going on.
it was 100% recommended. Absolutely delicious ??

will be coming back even it's only for the Sticky Asian chicken..

well done guys with the menu... food is great & your hospitality is 100% bang on.

The Christmas decor looks fab. ??????

The Botanist - a sad specimen!
We chose the restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary, having taken a river boat from Westminster on a lovely sunny afternoon. – a big mistake. Although The Botanist was not crowded, service was haphazard – a different member of staff almost every time with a great deal of confusion and uncertainty. The Botanist clearly thinks it's a gastro-pub but the food is nowhere near that standard. A short menu is not necessarily a bad thing – suggesting doing a few things well; however The Botanist's is short but with no evidence of things being done well. For a start one (of three) main course roasts, one dessert and one red wine were all ‘off’ – as may have been others we didn't find out about. Not only that, the dishes we could have were poor. .The portions for both the starters – smoked salmon and pate – were ‘mean’; the roasts at £12.50 each, were smothered in gravy and tasteless. My wife's second choice dessert., apple pie and custard, was dreadful – pastry covering a few huge lumps of apple, with minimal support from the custard. My sticky toffee pudding was tasteless – it may be a Northern dish but it's not rocket science. All in all, very disappointing!

Oh dear – a great site, one we have visited over many years but how standards have slipped! When we went they accepted our order, then decided the main course we had both chosen was ‘off’. Then they delivered our alternative choices but forgot all about the starters we ordered. One of the compliementary sweets we were given was virtually unedible (how can you screw up a creme bruleee?). Oh, and the place was full of unruly kids. Defintitely one to avoid now – such a shame, such a waste.
