SquareMeal Review of Suda

Silver Award

This smart, modern Thai has won plenty of fans, thanks to a winning formula of friendly staff, great cocktails and dishes packed with authentic flavours. Reliable classics such as creamy satay skewers, fragrant green chicken curry, pad Thai and fiery tom yum soup are all present and correct, but we think it's far more fun to explore the rest of the wide-ranging menu. Highlights on our last visit included the richly spiced signature red curry with duck and juicy, tangy tamarind prawns. Suda's take on som tam (a classic, hot-and-spicy papaya salad from Thailand's Isan region) is always a favourite, packed with fresh and fiery flavours. Cool coconut ice cream and gut-busting banana fritters offer final temptation. To drink, there's Singha beer on draft and a decent selection of wines served from Enomatics.

The atmosphere was ok, the service also though being asked what we wanted to drink 4 times in 5 minutes when we arrived was a little wearing. The food though was v disappointing. I think of Thai food as light, fresh, aromatic. This was chewy, heavy, glutinous. Tom yum was basically greasy water with a lot of chilli and a couple of prawns. Green curry lay on my stomach all evening. There was a strong aroma of lemon grass in the restaurant but I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the food. Fishcakes greasy and rubbery. I could go on but you get the picture. I saw it has 2 stars from Squaremeal which is normally a pretty reliable indicator - not this time. No exaggeration, this was low end chain restaurant standard.

Don't let the fact that the name of this establishment contains the word “Café” fool you into thinking that this is anything other than a fully-fledged restaurant. Three of us went last night and were impressed. The first surprise was to be given a choice of seating on what appeared to be a very busy night. We were advised that downstairs was quieter, so that's what we chose. The next surprise was the interesting table decorations: hand-carved wooden animals sporting the restaurant's details. Before we had come into the restaurant we had looked at the menu on display outside. It looked somewhat limited. The third surprise was to find a much fuller menu at our table with a great deal of choice. The last surprise was the rich flavours in all of our meals, surpassing what we expected. We enjoyed our starters, mains, desserts and drinks, served by friendly staff who were able to recommend both drinks and dishes, all for about £30 each. Great for a Saturday night out.

Some of the best Thai I have eaten
We went back again on Wednesday evening and have made a point to remember the name. of this great value for money Thai restaurant in a superb location. Discovered the huge 1st floor dinning area this time and it was really busy – last time we were early and it was pre-theatre so we ate downstairs. I had Calamrari with a sweet chilli dip followed by poached salmon. The salmon was really good – poached beautifully and the broth (sauce) was tangy and spicey. Best brown rice I have eaten – never expected to say that! Marked down slightly on the calamari – cooked beautifully (over cooked calamari is awful!) but the batter was lacking somewhat – or the oil they fried it in really need changing.

OK. It's not a promising start… A newly spruced commercial ‘quarter’ opens out of the Covent Garden alley between disappointing up-market Mexican Cantina Laredo and Jamie's Italian, the latter begrudgingly acceptable but for the tourist horde on their daily pilgrimage. Led here by an old friend with prior knowledge, I wasn't feeling it as I walked through the glorified shopping centre and into the enormous black box of a restaurant. The feelings didn't dissipate as I waited in the puzzling space somewhere between a bar, a tourist information centre and a cattle barn. Enormous sacks of different types of Thai rice lie around, interspersed with Thai tourism brochures. Amiable staff mill around with odd cocktails and authentic costumes avoiding your eye, it's like being at giant tourism industry trade fair World Travel Market. Upstairs it's a little more like a restaurant, and a huge one at that. Light beech Carl Hansen chairs add an odd Scandinavian feel to an otherwise quite industrial barn of a space. The staff remain, upstairs many more to service the swathes of empty tables, rabbit in a headlight like gazes while zipping around the space. Suffice to say I'm already not looking forward to this. The menu goes someway towards allaying those fears. It's (very) cheap for the area and a relatively traditional menu in style. Starters shared included very good chicken satay, with its sticky and spicy peanut sauce covering soft smooth chicken, Thai style calamari and cigars of minced pork and prawn in wanton wrappers. Tastewise the spare ribs were fine, but the watery sauce didn't really work as a shared starter. I next went for a namtok ped som tum, country style duck served with som tum salad and sticky rice. A neat touch mentioned in the menu advises that you can have it as hot as you like, and, like a boy, I asked for the ‘spicy’ version. Som Tum salad is one of those fragranced specialities that I tend not to order in Thai restaurants, saving space for a hearty massaman curry instead, but here I'm glad I did. Green papaya salad, made with carrot, tiny dried shrimp, fish sauce and some firey chilli, I wouldn't recommend having it anything other than regularly spiced though, it cut through the rich fatty duck well, along with most of my faculty for taste. It's a shame that despite the ‘Rice Bar’ moniker and the Visit Thailand display downstairs, there weren't more different styles of rice. A rice tasting menu would have been amusingly different, though not likely to appeal to the legions of tourists and shoppers they need to get through the doors to sustain the location.

I went for dinner with my husband tonite, and it was simply delicious. I was looking for an interesting night out uptown. After drinks at the Oxo Tower, we walked along the Southbank up to Covent Garden. I found this restaurant through Square Meal; whose reviews I find to be the most accurate. As someone who has never been to Thailand, I find the timeout review a bit over the top. I wanted a nice interesting, memorable evening, and this exceeded my expectations. The restaurant is in a very smart part of town, the staff were very welcoming to us and we were seated quickly. You can check their website for the menu, we had starters of calamari and satay chicken, and mains – beef salad and prawn tempura. The food was served very quickly, and the flavours were bursting with life and layers of different flavours. Satay chicken had hints of coconut, the tempura batter on the fish was melt in the mouth; light and crispy. And my beef salad was an experience – chilli, lime juice, coriander, med/rare melting beef and crisp salad leaves. Amazing! Unfortunately we didn't have time for dessert, but the next time I go back, I will be having the banana fritters with sesame seeds. A very enjoyable night, 2 people 2 courses plus drinks £30. I really enjoyed the decor and the table settings, however my one suggestion is to get a table with the padded chairs. I had a very numb bum, after sitting on a wooden stool for 45mins. Jane Adabale
