SquareMeal Review of Shane's on Chatsworth

Following the re-birth of Chatsworth Road’s once-famous street market, Shane’s is adding some extra foodie intent and local endeavour to the neighbourhood. The result is a tidy, squeezed-in space with just a few tables and a counter overlooking the street, but there’s plenty going on here. Owner Shane Harrison ticks most of the organic, seasonal and foraging boxes (right down to pickings from Hackney Marshes), and the result is a short, sharp menu that might deliver salt beef and horseradish croquettes or marinated gurnard with fennel and orange, ahead of mackerel and gooseberries with crispy potato and kohlrabi or braised lamb accompanied by white beans, garlic and spinach. To finish, perhaps try rhubarb fool or chocolate pot with rose-water jelly. The short wine list has plenty of decent drinking by the glass or carafe, and there are regular BYO nights.

Shanes was a great choice for a casual supper a few weeks ago, I’d heard great things about the fresh seafood being delivered from Cornwall and it completely failed to disappoint. The smoked mackerel starter was incredible; moist, flaky fish with a delicious seasonal coleslaw. Sadly the mains menu was mostly sold out but the wood pigeon was recommended as an underappreciated gem by the very friendly staff. We trusted them and were rewarded with a perfectly cooked, tender bird that even surpassed the waiter’s description. All in all this cosy little bistro deserves all the praise it’s received so far. I do hope they consider opening one south of the river.

I have lived in the area for 5 years and this is the first real proper restaurant near by and it's amazing. Wild flowers on the window and local art on the walls. The staff are lovely and the owner Shane is always popping up from the kitchen checking how everyone is enjoying themselves. It's great atmosphere even before the amazing food. We've come here during the day on a saturday and had plates and plates of british tapas – marinated sardines, cured meats, tomato salad and carafes of wine are a great touch. They do a BYO night too on Wednesdays which has become a bit of a routine now with our friends – I wish they did loyalty cards…we'd certainly be doing well.

What a great little restaurant. An unpretentious, cosy, kooky little place hidden away in Hackney with super friendly staff and amazing food. The ham croquettes are a must… as is the chocolate pot desert. Also, great value for money. For less than £60, my boyfriend and I dined on three courses each and also we could bring our own booze! I will definitely return to this little gem of a restaurant. I've already recommended it to all of my friends.

Found Shane's on Chatsworth when visiting the Chatsworth Rd market. Surrounded by cafe's Shane's was a restaurant with seriously good food. The Specials board for lunch is what caught my eye with – Home marinated sardines, potted smoked mullet with roe butter, salt beef croquettes (best I've tasted). My partner and I had a window seat where we could watch the market and enjoyed a great bottle of organic sauvignon from New Zealand. I then had a main of Berkshire roe deer with baby beetroot which was so tender and my partner had the wild mushroom risotto that was well portioned and tasty. Definitely coming back for dinner and bringing some foodie friends. The small restaurant had an arty feel with light shades made from clothes pegs and local art on the walls. The waitress was very smiley and explained the dishes well while pointing out her favourites. Great find wish them luck for the future

Having been to eat at Shane's twice now I can safely say the quality is outstanding and great value. Their early bird offer gives you 15%off your bill before 6pm but the menu is still fairly priced. The restaurant offers an intimate yet relaxed and friendly environment with work form local artist exhibited. The staff are welcoming and know their menu/produce inside out. One of the best dining experiences to be had! Especially recommend the salt beef croquette and broad bean gnocchi starters.
