SquareMeal Review of Shambles restaurant & winebar

Bronze Award

Shambles has been a fixture of the Teddington scene for over 30 years, providing very decent Italian food for a loyal brigade of locals and passers-by. It’s still a family affair, with daughter out front and the youngest son manning the stoves. Cicchette nibbles such as fried courgettes or salt cod beignets open the show, before a line-up of antipasti, pasta classics and bigger plates ranging from pan-roasted best end of spring lamb with roast garlic, potato and broad beans to hand-dived scallops with red prawns, celeriac and sweet ‘n’ sour saffron dressing. The menus are “always fresh” and readers also recommend daily specials such as smoked haddock florentine, while intriguing desserts run all the way from yoghurt foam with pomegranate, honeycomb and pistachio to chocolate ‘kangaroo balls’ (choux fritters) with cinnamon sugar and ice cream. The food is matched by a 100-bin Italian wine list, and it’s worth noting that Shambles is also open for late breakfast and brunch.

About

Tucked away in the heart of Teddington, Shambles restaurant and wine bar serves as a neighbourhood favourite, providing authentic Italian cuisine to locals and visitors alike. The name gives a nod to the building's history. Once a butchers and slaughterhouse, nowadays you'll find homemade pasta, vegetable gardens and relaxed dining.

The interior combines various different areas, allowing diners to choose from the bar, restaurant or even the huge garden terrace out the back. The wine bar comes complete with cosy and vibrant seating, decked out with colourful cushions and wooden tables that create an idyllic spot to relax with a couple of drinks. Pair this with a couple of dishes from the snacks menu for some casual dining. Elsewhere, the roar of a brick fireplace creates a cosy and homely atmosphere in the restaurant.

The garden, on the other hand, offers an escape from the busy streets outside. Take a seat in wicker chairs under a canopy of greenery, enjoying the quiet privacy of the walled space and beauty of the olive trees and wisteria blossoms. An ideal spot for al fresco dining during the warmer months.

Shambles' menu is packed full of Italian dishes although you'll be sure to see a twist or two on some of the classics. The menu changes seasonally but you can expect the likes of creamy burrata with blood orange and honey or the crispy fried squid with lemon and a fermented chilli sauce. Mains often come in the form of cavatelli, ravioli and tagliatelle as well as roast chicken with parma ham or slow cooked venison with braised carrots and buckwheat polenta.

On the drinks front, an extensive wine and cocktail menus provide excellent options for an aperitivo as well as plenty of teas and coffees that make for a delightful end to the meal.

What is the ambience at Shambles Restaurant & Winebar?

We have a relaxed atmosphere in the styles of a enoteca and a neighbourhood osteria, where guests can discover great food and quaffable wines. Cosy, friendly, lively with seasonal ingredients, that’s us in a nutshell.

What is the menu like at Shambles Restaurant & Winebar?

We let the ingredients do the talking. Serving high quality, fresh seasonal produce from the British Isles and Italy, with some ingredients for the menu grown in our restaurant garden. Following the traditions of Italian cooking (we’re mad about pasta) and occasionally breaking the rules, but only by a little!

The best 'Family Restaurant' outside Naples(?)
Have been to a few restaurants in Italy, Naples in particular and they do ‘family’ very well, as a blushing Brit,I'd assume better than us, however none I visited was quite as nice as this – run by a family for families – How Italian is that!! Forget Spagetti – although they do this too, this is Mamma's best country cooking, but cooked by her son with her daughter front of house! Food is excellent, mid priced, friendly service and Prosecco on tap! Can't be beat for a family lunch or a romantic evening meal for two – especially wonderful on a summers afternoon or evening in the garden with wisteria shading you as a hanging garden, if it were grapes it WOULD be Italy! Another glass of Prosecco and it is…almost! How good? – We're having our wedding lunch there – that's how good!!
