SquareMeal Review of Seven at Brixton

Exotic Brixton Market is the location for this cheap and cheerful daytime caff, which morphs into a rustic ersatz, Spanish-style backstreet bar come evening. Its quirky ‘luggage’ theme nods to a past incarnation, while exhibits by local artists are featured in a punky, anarchic gallery space above. Enjoy a selection of wines at peasant prices, plus sherries, Hispanic lagers and £5 cocktails – including basil and ginger beer mojito, old fashioned and Electric Avenue (a vodka, marmalade and pomegranate invention). To nibble there are assorted pintxos skewers involving cheese, chorizo, hams, spicy bites and piscine familiars; otherwise, go for sharing boards if you are particularly hungry, or order soups, salads, churros and trad Spanish desserts. It’s no el Bulli, but for good fun and a chance to try Ferran Adrià’s fruity, floral Estrella Damm Inedit beer, this is just the ticket.

Need a change in management...

Funky vibe, good for drinks but too loud to have a conversation over dinner inside unless you shout to one another.
My friend & I ordered 3 tapas dishes each. They brought out a selection of dishes on a platter & I recognised 2 of them as ones we’d ordered but not the 3rd, so assumed my friend had ordered that one (& she assumed that I had..). We were unaware we’d been given the table next to us order. About 10 minutes later our actual order arrived and we notified the waitress that something was a-miss. She fetched her manager ‘Sophie’. Sophie had the attitude of an insolent child. Her opening line being “I’ve been told you’ve got a problem with your order...” (accompanied by a face like a slapped arse). We explained what happened and she scoffed “We’ll you’ve started eating it now...!”, huffed and stormed off. No apology, no conversation, no nothing. We finished our meal giving some of our food to the table next to us, as there were duplications. Our bill arrived and we were charged for the food wrongly served to us despite raising it with ‘Sophie’ at the time. I advised our waitress ‘Winnie’, who was polite and far more professional than her manager, and Sophie came back out to our table. Wow.... Sophie stepped her bad attitude up a notch, to the point that customers around us were shocked. She shouted that we “were unfair refusing to pay for it, as we’d eaten the food” and she “will not take it off our bill”. We tried to have a conversation & explained we’d already started to eat it before realising it wasn’t ours but she repeatedly shouted that we were being unfair & we should pay for it. When we refused, she again stormed off. It was impossible to have an adult conversation with this girl. Winnie later returned with a revised bill and apologised saying that it was her mistake. Winnie really ought to be managing this place. Sophie should perhaps go back to doing her paper-round...

Food was really good, sturdy, authentic, all 6 of us were happy (and we all got different things). Happy with Mojitos, the half pint of olives, the tortilla (we are fussy as we are half Spanish), all good. The rooms are fun, mixture of artsy-retro-kitsch, with colourful graffiti on walls; retro café tables, great views from some windows over narrow market alley…cool and fun and would go back over and over again, if I lived there. One quibble – some folks hanging out there were VERY NOISY and it was really off putting. However, one little moment spoilt a great place, and this is NOT the fault of the owners = but suddenly the guys ‘next door’ (there are little rooms off each other) were on brink of having a violent fight. Freaky. Luckily the aggressor flew out of building, and then the second guy followed in a hurry. Not funny. Scary. Would love to know if this was a regular problem with eating at the Market – for sure, these guys were drunk, so if I went back, I would check with Seven at Brixton if this is a regular occurrence. Had this not happened, would have given 5/5 for atmosphere. GR8 food, nice waitress, super room (the Idiom is the one we ate in), but would be nervous of going back in case of a similar fight-nite prospect. Not fair to taint venue, venue's great, but important to mention this moment.
