SquareMeal Review of Red Rooster at The Curtain

Silver Award

The polishing up of Shoreditch continues with the arrival of The Curtain hotel (just round the corner from the equally new Nobu Shoreditch). Although this luxe offering comes with a rooftop swimming pool, its in-house restaurant retains its Shoreditch cool with quirky decor and painfully cool staff. Red Rooster has a twin in New York’s Harlem and, like its NYC sibling, the Shoreditch menu is a celebration of America’s southern soul food, carried off with panache. We kick-started our evening with a trio of snacks including fish tacos, bacon-loaded popcorn and crumbly cornbread slathered with sweet honey butter and spicy tomato jam. We then moved on to a starter proper of meatballs served swimming in zingy pickled gravy and dotted with perfectly crisp bites of gnocchi. As Red Rooster’s name suggests, poultry is the star turn, but we mixed things up, skipping the fried yard bird and herb-roasted chicken for a helping of tender, spicy jerk pork and prawns, served with sweet coconut rice and chunks of juicy pineapple. Desserts are just as indulgent (rum-soaked doughnuts anyone?) and our slice of red velvet sponge, served with cream cheese sorbet and chocolate cremeux, was as sweet as can be. With brunch on Sunday and live music most evenings, Red Rooster is an impressive addition to the Shoreditch scene. With all that US soul food though, it’s just as well that The Curtain has a gym.

About

This New York import has brought a slice of Harlem to hipster Shoreditch. Owned by restaurateur, Marcus Samuelsson, Red Rooster brings punch North American cuisine to east London is style, with a heavy focus on Southern soul food influenced by metropolitan New York and Samuelsson’s European upbringing. The restaurant feels appropriately located within the sprawling, diverse hub of culture that is Shoreditch, and is superbly located in the centre of the area, near the high street.

The restaurant hosts a load of American themed events throughout the year from superbowl screenings to gospel brunches – which is exactly how it sounds, music-filled brunching affairs supplied with live entertainment from the local gospel choir.

The Red Rooster is an American haven for hearty southern staples such as shrimp ‘n’ grits and lip-smacking fried chicken waffles dripping in honey. The menu also lets Marcus’ European upbringing shine through, with Maria’s ricotta gnocchi offering an Italian influence to the heavily North American inspired restaurant. No American restaurant would be complete without a burger, and the Lenox satisfies that order, topped with onion jam, cheddar, chilli aioli, bacon, and fried egg – for days when you need to get your cravings sorted.

The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, without any of the garish furnishings associated with American cuisine. The inside of the restaurant features exposed white bricks, wall lamps, and colourful brick flooring. There’s a lovely tree feature in the centre of the restaurant, offering a pop of greenery, while the furniture continues the theme of bright and colourful. The restaurant still maintains and air of sophistication, as the classy décor welcomes patrons in. For the warmer days, you’ll want to sit outside and you’ll quickly forget that you’re in London as rounds of smoky short-ribs and Ethiopian chicken stews make their way to your table.

Good & Bad

We had dinner here for our wedding anniversary.     It was slightly disappointing in that we were sitting at a table next to a dead space where other people had flung their coats and where their wine coolers were kept so the wait staff were constantly leaning round our table to get drinks for other people.

This was even more annoying because it took ages for anyone to take our order for drinks but when the waitress did arrive she was really helpful and apologised for the delay.   She did explain that they were short staffed behind the bar but sadly we were half way through our meal before our drinks arrived.   She was very apologetic and gave my husband an extra beer but for a restaurant of this calibre (and the prices charged) we felt that such a long wait was not really acceptable.

When the food arrived it was lovely but very overpriced for what it was -  £44 for a roast chicken for two and the sides weren't great.  Lots of carbs but very few vegetables.  The desserts however were fantastic

Finally, the live music was super but so so loud.  It was impossible to have a conversation without shouting across the table so it wasn't a relaxing experience.

All in all we quite enjoyed the evening but I don't think we'll go back anytime soon.

Terrible service spoiled our meal
We've eaten in the Red Rooster before and really enjoyed it so were looking forward to a family Christmas supper here. The live music was excellent and finished at about 9pm which worked well in terms of holding a conversation but everything else was disappointing. The service was truly dreadful - no-one was interested in firstly, taking our order and subsequently delivering it! Our water wasn't replenished, drinks which we'd ordered never appeared (except on the bill!), we had to get out of our seat to find a waiter to order more drinks and then we were told to go to the hotel bar upstairs to get cocktails. The waiter hadn't a clue when asked any questions about the menu and when I commented that my pear salad had only four tiny slices of pear, appeared totally disinterested. The restaurant had mostly emptied out by 10pm so it wasn't as thought he was run off his feet! The food was still predominantly good and the vibe is nice but this really was an unacceptable level of service.

Great birthday dinner
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and what fun we had! The food was great - especially the chicken for 2. The band were such a great addition and our waitress was really lovely and made such a fuss of him on his special day. Overall great.

Fantastic food, great ambiance, excellent service and brilliant live band!
I was slightly apprehensive about eating at the Red Rooster on a Saturday night as experience has taught me that live music and conversation in restaurants don't mix, but i couldn't have been more wrong. At our request we were seated in a corner away from the band but they were so fantastic that we wished we were closer, although the volume was perfect. From the moment we arrived and enjoyed excellent gin and tonics, the mood was set for a first class experience. Cristiano, our waiter, was on point - attentive and helpful - we asked for a break between our starters and mains and he asked how long we'd like and the second course arrived bang on the agreed time. The menu was concise and, unusually, everything on it was tempting! Both the bass ceviche and the tuna poke were light and flavoursome - perfect starters - but the standout dish was the Obama Short Ribs for two. Mouthwateringly rich with loads of meat, my only (tiny) quibble with the whole meal was that i felt such a powerful mix of flavours really needed a side like Mash or Rice to 'dilute' the punch to the tastebuds. This is a great place for dinner and apparently they do a Gospel Sunday brunch so we'll definitely be back.

So much fun!
Wow this place is fun! We started off with drinks at the bar upstairs (first time trying a Brooklyn beer!) and didn't wait too long before our table was ready. Heading downstairs past artwork and cool memorabilia, we were seated with a great view of the live band (I believe they come on around 7.30pm onwards). Such a good vibe, people were singing and dancing and the food was super yummy! Once finished, we sat at the bar and had a few more drinks whilst the DJ played. A fab Friday night in Shoreditch! I'll definitely be taking some of my US friends here when they are visiting London for sure.
