SquareMeal Review of Quirinale

Bronze Award

Elegant Quirinale has all the trappings that suited-and-booted Westminster lobbyists and government flunkies appreciate: quiet, discreet service, a “traditional” Italian menu that aims to please without taking centre stage, and a kitchen that always delivers. The comfortable basement dining room has a buzzy feel at lunchtime with light flooding in through a huge skylight, while night-time sees a more relaxed, unhurried atmosphere as the lights are dimmed. The menu is blessedly short, but full of well-presented classics notable for their “excellent flavours”: start with beef carpaccio or smoked tuna with citrus and fennel, before tackling spaghetti with clams and bottarga, veal cutlet Milanese or cod fillet with tomatoes, capers and olives. For dessert, perhaps plump for tiramisu or a chocolate brownie. Champagne and port are essential additions to the otherwise Italian wine list, and a helpful sommelier is on hand to guide customers through its byways.

I have never written a review or complained about a restaurant before, but this place is appalling. We made a group booking and were sent a menu. Half of the dishes were no longer available when we arrived. Even though this was at midday. The braesola salad was limp; the pasta was under-cooked and over-priced; and the staff were rude. I was shouted at for ordering something which actually was on the menu, as was another member of our party, and a waitress was treated appallingly in front of us. Do not eat here. This place is unpleasant and over-priced. There are plenty of other good restaurants in the area.

In my ongoing quest for interesting lunch venues in the Westminster area I booked Quirinale to meet up with a friend who I’ve not seen for ages. It’s a perfectly decent venue – certainly not somewhere worth making a special trip to, but if, like me, you work 5 minutes walk away it’s a good option. Despite being in the basement and also rather small the dining room managed the difficult trick of being both light and spacious, if ultimately a bit bland. The atmosphere was fine, not exciting, but not noisy, cramped or stuffy, just lots of suits having lunch – like me! Service is efficient and effective – you get what you ask for and it turns up without awkwardly long waits which makes it ideal for a quick lunch. The only downside did seem to be the slightly strange insistence on repeatedly offering the rather good selection of bread – I think we saw the basket/tray on about 4 occasions, which was at least twice too many given we’d already refused any more after the first round. Food is brilliant value – the lunchtime set menu is £19 for 2 courses and £23 for 3, which stands comparison to almost anywhere half decent in central London. Add on a bottle of water and 12.5% service and the entire bill came to about £45, which split 2 ways is a very nice option. Food is good rather than stunning. I had spiced pumpkin and amaretti soup to start, credit for the fact it was properly hot rather than merely warm when it arrived, thick and had some interesting flavours. This was followed by spinach and ricotta gnocchi with parmesan and roast tomatoes – nicely cooked, and filling, but just a slightly bland set of flavours. We skipped dessert. Overall I liked it – it certainly wouldn’t stand out as one of the finest Italian restaurants in London, but it’s a nice alternative from some of my usual haunts and somewhere I’ll be going back to.

the food was excellent in very relaxed if not a little hushed surroundings . Service was attentive but discrete at all times. Would recommend if specifically looking for a dining experience in the Westminster area but wouldn't detour especially to go there.

I dont beleive in these web sites, BUT i had to use one as i did not know where to book. I read the site and saw teh pictures and my taste buds came to life. The restaurant took my booking and called me in teh am to check that i still wanted my table. I said yes and joking said i want the best table. I got it. The food and service was 1st class. I hate places that charge 12.5% service and dont deliver they did. We all opted for the 19.99 2 course lunch time menu and then had 2 massive cheese plates. The cheese was out of this world. If i was in Wesminster and wnated a fine meal i would def, return. My guests are booking their firms xmas lunch! Worth a visit and you wont be dissapointed!

As safe as houses – no pun intended given the proximity to the Houses of Parliament. Fabulous food, discreet staff, good wine menu. You would never know you are in a basement as it is very well lit and the tables are well spaced for such a small place so eves-dropping or noise levels isn't a major issue.
