SquareMeal Review of Palmers

Palmers, a good-natured ‘father & sons’ operation on the Roman Road, feels like a labour of love. Though the ‘urban’ location, dreary view (of No 8 buses hurtling by) & bland blond wood don’t exactly sizzle, the thoughtful ‘fantastically executed’ & ‘keenly priced’ modern European bistro food certainly does. Neck of lamb fillet, an often-overlooked cut, doesn’t feel like second best here when teamed with fluffy polenta gnocchi & purple-sprouting broccoli. Monkfish ceviche, salmon Wellington with mussels, & aubergine parmigiana with courgette salad, suggest the meat-favouring kitchen can do ‘pescatarian’ & vegetarian, too. Menus change regularly & include a bargain £10 Sunday roast. The limited wine list ‘feels a bit steep’ but – just about – does the job. A ‘welcome addition to the area’ with ‘no airs & graces’ & a ‘really relaxed, easy atmosphere’.

Went to Palmers Restaurant for NYE Just gone with some friends & our children (age range 2-4yr) having been there with my wife for a date night previously. Was not disappointed by the service & attentiveness of the staff to assist with the small, impeccably behaved toddlers in tow. We live on Palmers Road so it is very convenient for us & would serious recommend to anyone in the area or beyond. It's a fairly small, family run establishment so the menu is fairly small but the food is very good. I had the steak & chips & on both occasions it was cooked really well. & for £17 (with chips & bearnaise sauce) is fantastic value. The Malbec is really nice & reasonably priced too .The desserts were spot on-I had the chocolate pudding which was very good. The overall service/atmosphere, whether it's for a night out with your partner or a family meal with children is great. Will definitely being going back there soon .

I was in Scallop heaven here. I really go wild for scallops ever since trying them at Zuma, but these were even better. The slightly buttery delicate subtle fishy starter really melted in my mouth. With the spicy chorizo it was a clever combination. Tastebuds suitably teased, then came the Pork Wellington. What a fabulous surprise to find such tender tasty succulent pork, flavoured interestingly with herbal highlights of thyme/rosemary. I love flaky pastry and it goes so well in this dish, but the addition of crunchy shavings of celeriac with apple roulade delighted me. The wine was very reasonably priced so I tried the Chaz Rouge unoaked. It is a blend of four types of grapes chosen to provide a delicious bouquet of berries and cherries, extremely quaffable and went down well with the pork. I have made this restaurant my favourite and have never been disappointed after many repeat visits, including the roast sunday lunches.

On the site of the old Winkles Restaurant, this is a welcome addition to the area, offering great eclectic food at a reasonable price. Owned and run by a family trio with dad up front and the sons in the kitchen, there is a really relaxed and easy atmosphere here, with no rush to leave and no heirs and graces to worry about. The food changes almost weekly on a short menu and is always fantastically executed. On a Sunday they will do a roast for £10.50 a head so a vertiable bargain, as well as the a la carte if that's not your thing. The only thing is the wine. The list doesn't have enough particularly good wine and sometimes it feels a bit steep for what you are getting – a Matteus Rose at £14.50 is the worst offender! And the white by the glass is never cold enough. However, these are small niggles for an overall great experience. It has definitely upped the local game and I hope they stay open. Particularly as they are only across the street from my house!
