SquareMeal Review of Oblix at The Shard

Gold Award

High in the sky above the sweeping London landscape sits Oblix, one of a handful of restaurants in tourist magnet The Shard. Boasting truly stunning views of the capital, alongside a menu of “first class” food, it has long been a favourite among SquareMeal readers.

At Oblix, moody modern aesthetics (the reception desk is in almost complete darkness) soon give way to truly stunning panoramic vistas. Owner Rainer Becker is better known for Asian-themed Zuma and Roka, but Oblix is more firmly rooted in Western gastronomy. The menu kicks off with snacks and small plates, including a decadent and crisp truffled flatbread which is topped with shavings of pancetta and flakes of ricotta. Elsewhere, try springy crispy squid pepped up with chilli and lime, or perhaps a super fresh and creamy lobster and clam linguini.

Sizeable mains come from the in-house Josper grill, rotisserie and wood-fired oven – think steaks in various sizes served alongside thick-cut chips and helpings of rich mac ‘n’ cheese, and a tender helping of duck with a crispy skin, dipped in a vibrant mango sauce. For pudding, the dessert platter is surely the only way to go, featuring miniature versions of Oblix’s entire dessert menu, including a bar of chocolate topped with crunchy bourbon ice cream, and a fluffy slice of New York cheesecake.

If dinner reservations prove hard to book, Oblix also offers a weekend brunch menu complete with an extensive dessert station, and a luxe Sunday lunch featuring the likes of lamb rump with puy lentils, parsley and mint. For the budget minded, a “good value” set lunch menu offers an affordable way in.

About

One of six restaurants and bars in towering skyscraper The Shard, Oblix is a contemporary restaurant located on the 32nd Floor offering a sophisticated dining experience with much of the menu cooked on the kitchen’s rotisserie and charcoal grill. The restaurant has a double identity and is split between two distinct spaces with Oblix West being home to the main dining room.

Providing a more formal dining experience, enjoy a muted and relaxed atmosphere at Oblix West at The Shard, in a setting that boasts awe-inspiring views of west London and employs a muted colour scheme of tan leather upholstery seating and natural woods which let those views do the talking.

Here, you’ll find a buzzy open kitchen by the entrance and a chic dining room in which you can enjoy lunch, brunch or dinner from a selection of menus celebrating the best of British cuisine with modern day twists. The a la carte menu features a number of highlights such as the barbecued Iberico pork ribs with jalapeno salsa verde or cedar smoked black cod with pickled onion and citrus.

There's also a great selection of dishes intended for sharing, with sharing starters such as tempura crab cakes or beef carpaccio, as well as a seafood platter or a whole grilled turbot which are both designed for two to three people. There is also the option to order from the grill – think a selection of steaks and whole lobster slathered in garlic butter.

On the weekends, Oblix West serves a three-course brunch with the option to add bottomless Prosecco or completely indulge with the Limitless Bruch complete with unlimited Champagne, wine and cocktails. Starters include red tuna tartare and a classic prawn cocktail, while main courses see spicy seafood spaghetti and grilled rotisserie chicken served alongside with lemon, garlic and rosemary mashed potatoes.

An extensive wine list will take your evening to the next level with a selection of wines from all over the world carefully recommended by the restaurant's sommeliers.

Never again. Tourist trap and very poor food

Appalingly bad. £200 for 2. Glass of terrible wine 25 for 250ml. 10 for cold scallops for 1. We were auppossed to have a brunch with a selection of starters. Got the order wrong. Starter took 45 mins to arrive. 2 Wagu beef burgers ... £75 ... the burger was unremarkable ... 5 guys quality and taste. At this point we've been there 1.5 hours. Manager rolls up and tries to argue about the time we waited ... i aslo asked what exactly was 'fine dining' about what we had and she said they had been trying to get that removed from the website. Never again.

Great restaurant for the "wow factor" views.

Overall the restaurant boats some of the best views in London, overlooking the city and river. The atmousphere is always crisp, professional with relaxed undertones.

We invited out clients for dinner who are visitors to London, they were truely wowed by the views and atmousphere, but were let down by the lack of vegetarian and vegan choices on the menu. Considering the majority of our party were vegetarians there wasn't much choice.

The service was professional and efficient but not overly friendly, something I might expect of a high end restaurant.

In short, if you want to wow your dinner guests with some of the best views in London, here is the place, but do not expect Michelin food & service.

Amazing experience so glad I picked this restaurant to take my mum on her birthday for her first time experience of this sort of food and service. And the views are just WOW.

Let's be honest, you're here for the view.. But then the rest delivers too. Best of all was the sommelier; a youngish gent with the knowledge of generations. The staff were always there to catch your eye and everything was as efficient as the food was superb. I've been back three times and love taking visitors to London: showcasing some of the best we have against the backdrop of the best city in Europe!
