SquareMeal Review of Oblix at The Shard (bar)

Bronze Award

Reached down a dark corridor that feels like the entrance to a Zen spa, Rainer Becker’s slick, corporate restaurant in The Shard comes with an accompanying penthouse-chic lounge bar. The views “make you feel like a giant over teenie weenie London”, but almost as dazzling are the drinks, served with a side of live music: rat pack standards, urban loft loungecore, and swinging jazz, played throughout weekend brunch and each evening from 7pm. There’s a small no-bookings area, but it’s wise to reserve a table for the best views. Reformulated cocktails (£12.50) are simply named after their primary flavours, thus ‘Grapefruit’ brings Ketel One vodka, camomile, egg whites and soda to the mix. Alternatively, sip floral-fragranced Tanqueray Ten gin and Champagne sparklers (£14.50). Signature bar dishes include seared beef in lime, chilli and ginger; and grilled aubergine in yoghurt with mint and pomegranate – at predictably sky-high prices.

See my separate review of the main restaurant so I don't want to repeat it again. You go here for the view, and what a view it is. The bar/lounge both serves as “holding” pattern for visitors of the restaurant (and if you go here you should spend the extra time either before or after dinner) as well as being bookable on its own. While I haven't eaten here (I did so at the main restaurant) I understand the menu being a scaled-down version of the restaurant. Besides the view a nice, stylish setting with remarkably the female waiter dresses being rather a weird negative stand-out (strange floral costume), but that's an irrelevant side-point. Service can be over-stretched though

Great service, fantastic atmosphere, amazing views
I visited Oblix (bar) last week with Friends and had the best night out. The staff were very polite, friendly and attentive to our needs. They were efficient and looked after us very well. A special thank you to Scott, the Manager on the night and all his team for their efforts. The bar area is very buzzy but also relaxing and chilled at the same time. There is a live band that plays jazz music in the evening – the singer had the most amazing, effortless singing voice I have ever heard live! We were lucky enough to be seated near the front of the Shard and had the most amazing views over London. A visit to Oblix is definitely a must do for any tourist or resident of London.

Fabulous!!
Went to the Oblix on Friday after work, we were greeting by friendly and helpful staff. The place is amazing the staff pamper to your every need, especially Scott who was extremely attentive! The views are amazing and the atmosphere was great, especially after dark when the jazz band and singer started! Fantastic place for that special occasion or just a drink after work. Either way you wont be disappointed.

Great food spoiled by the atmosphere
The food is excellent, and is a cut down version of the menu on the main restaurant andfd the quality was as good. we had a front row seat to view the live band and they were good. Unfortunately the bar was heaving and were all constantly walking past our table. They need to decide whether they want to be a Supper Club or a tourist bar> Our experience suggests they can't be both! It is a heck of a view though.

An wonderful experience
Our dining experience at Oblix was a sensory experience. Walking through the purposefully dark hallway into the sunlight filled bar was breath taking. The views both from the restaurant and the bar are panoramic. All four of our meals were of a very high standard and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Oblix to anyone. We so loved our first dining experience, we have been back two weeks later and I can pleased to say it was just as good the second time.

How Dissapointing
I attended the bar last night as I had a booking in the future for a family celebration so wanted to check the premises out. I was met by 5 members of staff at the lift entrance and asked if I had a booking to go into the bar as ''people were using this as an excuse to check out the view'' When I advised no I was let in anyway which was baffling. I was then met by 5 more little girls in ‘party’ dresses in a poorly lit hallway who led me to the bar. ( I thought I could have made my own way, obviously not) I ordered a cocktail which was overpowering with herbs that I couldn't taste the drink and was offered a change. I was given a half of glass as I had sipped the first drink twice !! Then received a bill for £14.50 with service. A steep bill for basically a Gin and TOnic with yet more herbs in. The clientele was ‘mixed’ to say the least and it seemed that anyone who could afford to pay their drinks bill was let in , regardless of how they were dressed. I cancelled my dinner reservation and wasnt questioned or thanked. No service. No value for money. No interest. Oh and look out for the birthday cake they insist on making ( not allowed to bring one ) £10 a head regardless of how many – A licence to print money nothing more…

Oblix - a unique experience in London
This venue offers a unique combination – great food and fantastic atmosphere, all of which you can find in many restaurants and bars around London, but the magic and unique ingredient is the view. From 32nd floor you get an awesome view to accompany each course. As a party of four we had a good cross section from the menu and there were no disappointments. The smoked salmon on falt bread was plentiful enough to share, so we all tried that one. Steak and lamb chops were done to perfection according to diners requests, and the sea bass was a treat – served whole but with the bone frame completely removed. Excellent desserts and coffee were served as the jazz band struck up. We started our dinner in daylight and as the courses progressed the lights came on in London, showing this great city at night. Tower Bridge is a picture lit up. We will be returning to the restaurant to enjoy the view of St Paul's and Westminster.
