SquareMeal Review of Nobu Berkeley St (bar)

Bronze Award

Wondrously exotic lounges such as The Blue Bar and Artesian are the late David Collins’ legacy to London's cocktail scene, but at his creative peak, the Irish designer came up with this fabulously ethereal bar at Nobu Berkeley St – the Tardis as imagined for a Japanese remake of Doctor Who, perhaps. Once inside, you can pair Eurasian tapas and sushi platters with silkily superior saké, pedigree French fizz or a selection of top-notch Tokyopolitans. Nifty ideas include Nashi Bottle (a pear, rosemary, orgéat and Russian vodka sour, served in a milk bottle) and Silk Road (a Manhattan based on Nikka whisky, dates and Grand Marnier). Otherwise, One Shade of Grey (a blue Curaçao-laced twist on a Negroni, ‘served sadistically short’) is a cheapish thrill, while Japanese Painkiller (Nobu's take on New York's modern whisky classic, Penicillin) reportedly cures all ills.

Great atmosphere, cool crowd, always some z list celeb bimbo hanging out with sugar dadies!! but is good cabaret. Only thing, drinks are sooooo expensive, 1 beer and 2 house wine 125 ml each, £30, u are having a laugh, and the guy behind the bar had the cheek to put service charge!! which i told him to take off! this place is great but you defo pay for it.

I took my boyfriend here for a surprise Birthday meal, normally I wouldn't even consider going here because of the price. However, as a special occasion, it was perfect. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist, escorted upstairs and passed over to a waitress who took us over to our table, all staff were friendly, the atmosphere was romantic yet buzzy and the food was a taste sensation! Nobu lives up to it's standards and I would definitely like to go again, if someone else gets the bill this time!! Favourite Dishes: - Scallops - Lobster Tacos - Black Miso Cod

One of the poorest meals of my life, at £170 for two people. I asked if the lemon sole was filleted, the answer from the waitress was ‘yes’, which would indicate a fillet of sole, errr – no, deep fried goujons. I sent this back and by this time my wife had finished her (extremely bland) salmon, so I ended up having sushi, which was unimpressive, uninspiring and basic. Pity, that’s the last time I’d go to Nobu after that, Crazy Bear runs absolute rings around this place, go to Crazy Bear for a far better experience – quality of food, ambience and service.

I just went yesterday as my birthday treat from my husband (erm it's today in reality)… I always thought it was going to be pretentious and “are you on the guest list” type but No! Of course a bit of crowd watching and some Louboutins around but I was amazed to get in so easily. I have to commend Head Barman Simone for the superb cocktails, Nobu is living to its reputation! Can I have another Mojito please? We went on upstairs for dinner and here it was phenomenal: all a surprise selection of signature dishes by our waiter Nicolas (french like me , nobody's perfect)… we had the yellowtail sashimi, I am not a big fan usually but oh boy. Black cod (the one VB likes) and the wagyu beef to follow, again it delivers incredible taste and at the same time seems so simple… not mentioning the soft shell crab sushi. Wait until dessert to tuck into the chocolate tart that is not a tart. Not cheap but it's not your cantine, but service efficient but nice at the same time and that's rare even in a star michelin place. I love you darling and Nobu aussi!

Just spent the evening at Nobu – our first and probably only visit with another couple of friends (bill £586 for the four of us) we had the £85 set meal. The music was very loud and it didn't help being seated next to a group of ultra trendy idiots who chose to sing and shout for most of the evening. The food was lovely, but I'm still hungry! The place is basic but worth a trip if you are just going to BE SEEN! But tonight it was full of eastern europeans, fat sugar daddies with very young girls and prostitutes. Other than that the crowd was 20-25, all very drunk. Food was gorgeous, but for the cash it was very rushed, you'd just put your chop sticks down from one course to have it quickly replaced by another and so on – you felt like you were on a treadmill as soon as you arrived. For the cash I like to feel like I'm being looked after, rather than 'you are here because we say it's okay, and you should feel honoured to be here and give us your money!' Going to give Roka a try…as we won't be going back to Nobu!
