SquareMeal Review of Murano

Gold Award

Fresh off a breezy refurb, Michelin-starred Murano’s forest green awnings are looking as smart as ever, as light beams out through the front windows onto Queen Street. After fifteen years at the top of the game Murano is stone-clad Mayfair royalty these days, and it still has an air of magic.

Though the refurb may have slightly loosened up Murano’s double Windsor, it still feels thoroughly sophisticated inside, and it still attracts an older, more affluent crowd as well as some one-off celebration dinners. Pale, soothing tones meet the odd art-deco flourish and, of course, an abundance of Murano glass. Our table at the back of the restaurant has a prime view of the kitchen through a large viewing window - a sighting of Angela is not a guarantee but the bustling kitchen is fun to watch nonetheless.

What sets Murano apart from similar restaurants is how slick the experience is. Staff are incredibly knowledgeable, and extremely good at offering help without being intrusive. The flexible a la carte allows you to choose anywhere between three and six courses, but rather than being over or underfed, the kitchen automatically balances the size of your portions accordingly.

Nothing ever feels like too much to ask at Murano, and if the staff are fantastic, the food is even more so. Hartnett looks at Italian cuisine through English eyes, but her vision is one of simplicity. What other restaurant of this level would serve you tortellini en brodo without flinching? Seven beautiful tortellini are so perfectly folded they seem almost not real, arranged in a flower pattern, submerged up to the waist in rich chicken broth. It’s heavenly, and just one of five brilliant courses that also includes sea bass crudo with ajo blanco, and a beautifully cooked piece of halibut in a gutsy langoustine bisque.

Sommelier service is predictably superb - we left choices in the hands of our sommelier and he came back with a range of options from classic to left-field. Murano sealed the deal with a last flourish - a spoon of lemon sorbet slipped into the middle of a greengage souffle. After fifteen years, Murano might be as good as it has ever been.

About

Located in the heart of Mayfair, Murano is Angela Hartnett’s Michelin-starred restaurant, where diner's can indulge in the chef’s signature honed Italian cookery. Having mastered the staples of Italian cooking from her grandmother and aunts, the food is a reflection of Harnett’s childhood, elevated with excellent quality produce and knowledge acquired from decades in the UK's culinary scene.

Aiming to take the stuffiness out of fine dining, the space is warm and welcoming, with soft lighting, comfortable seating and eccentric paintings on the walls. It's the perfect setting for a relaxing yet elegant meal. The a la carte menu changes regularly to ensure all ingredients are as seasonal as possible and features a select few dishes per day, which diners are encouraged to try in whatever order they please.

Choose from anywhere between three or six courses, with no traditional signposting as to what might be a starter or main, bringing an element of unexpected theatre and entertainment to the table.

The frequently changing a la carte menu might include the likes of rabbit raviolo with courgette, basil and sauce vierge, red mullet with burnt orange romesco and a ricotta filled courgette flower, and veal tartare with aged parmesan, almond cream and dill, all of which featured on the restaurant's summer menu. To finish your meal, tuck into desserts like caramelised Amalfi lemon tart or whisky baba with strawberries and smoked vanilla ice cream. Each dish displays a suggested sweet wine pairing, too.

To accompany your meal, the Murano wine cellar comprises outstanding bottles from renowned Italian vineyards, as well as international bottles. The collection focuses on grapes that complement the cuisine and growers who share the ethos of quality and flavour. There is an extensive number of wines available by the glass, including Champagne and sparkling wines, as well as plenty of sought-after bottles from highly regarded labels.

Outstanding service from the moment you enter Murano. Food is top quality and plentiful and prepared to perfection. Wine selection is varied and fairly priced. Lovely warm atmosphere while providing a very professional service. Would not change a thing

Excellent food attentive but discreet service

Best restaurant I have been to in a long time.  All the food was delicious the mussel linguini was to die for ! The maitre was the star  of the service. He was attentive to all customers, not just the regulars and the chefs table. He also covered any gaps in the sevice at busy times. I don't know why this only has one star it is better than the 2 star restaurants that I have been to .

Not up to standard

Our visit did not start too well. The welcome was fairly summary and we were shown to a table uncomfortably close to the stand at which the front of house staff gathered. My request to be moved was met with a shrug of the shoulders, and we were taken to a smaller table at the far end of the dining room, which in fact had the benefit of a good view of the kitchen, although this did not entirely compensate for the lack of space on the table.  There is no tasting menu, so we chose from each of the five groups of dishes offered, our first selection being being the seared scallop, which was tasty but far less than melt-in-the mouth. I left it and expressed my disappointment to the waiter, who returned a little later to inform us that chef had found nothing wrong with it as it was only seared. Clearly I was just a paying customer with no taste. Not how to run a starred restaurant in my opinion, and in complete contrast to the attitude in the restaurant we dined in the previous evening. Obviously I tried not to let the first course cloud the picture for the rest of the meal. Our agnolotti presented a pretty picture with good balance between the exceptional morels, the notable herbiness of the pasta and the cheese, and this dish was followed by some of the best asparagus we’ve ever had, from a small grower in Essex, with perfectly done hazelnuts making for a good taste and crunch match and topped off with good parmesan. We never turn down the chance of having Cornish turbot, and even though it was a tiny portion its class showed, as did that of the St George’s mushroom, of which we unfortunately got just one, as was the case with the white asparagus. The fish was done in what appeared to be the set method for the restaurant, namely seared, but this time properly. The final Spring Menu course was very good pork belly and loin with a good old-fashioned match of apple sauce and mash, plus fruit with mild mustard and decent stuffed cabbage. From the separate dessert menu we ordered lovely Amalfi lemon tart which was well caramelised to balance the strong lemon, and a peanut mousse, chocolate and banana sorbet concoction which went down well. Our fresh mint tea was served in one ungenerous pot for two people. There were a few lovely elements to this meal but overall nothing that sparked the chain of appreciative remarks we had hoped to be making. We almost had the impression that the good was sufficient and that most of the staff were more or less going through the motions. Typical of the situation was the fact that our request for a copy of the menu to take away seemed to throw the waitress and we were simply provided with sheets removed from the presentation folder - there was no indication of the name of the restaurant nor any further details. We found this lacking in professionalism. At least cost of the scallop dish was deducted from the bill!
