SquareMeal Review of Mint Leaf

Bronze Award

Almost exactly opposite Her Majesty's Theatre, this upmarket Indian occupies an enviable position yet is easily missed beyond its grand, John Nash-designed stucco façade, which reveals few clues. Descend the staircase however and you'll discover a lively, low-lit bar and restaurant, divided up by dramatic wooden runways and slatted screens. Business meetings, celebratory dinners and inquisitive tourists are fuelled by traditional grills, curries and biryanis. Aubergine curry balances smoked creaminess with the bite of springy peas, while slow-cooked chicken thigh in a tomato, onion and coriander seed sauce is unchallenging but satisfying comfort food. Cheese-stuffed naans are a soft and dense highlight, tempura asparagus spears with a sweet chilli dip an incongruous option. Prices are predictably steep for the address, but the restaurant hasn’t scrimped on great staff and service. There's also an excellent range of worldwide wines – US Viognier by the glass is a particularly sturdy companion for Mint Leaf's rich menu.

The best Indian food experience in London!
I have eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants in London and all over India but Mint Leaf definitely stands out for me. I visited the fine-dining restaurant and lounge over 5 times in my 4 week visit to London and I was delighted every time during my visit, whether on a weekday for lunch or on a busy weekend for an intimate dinner. The ambiance and service at Mint Leaf is perfect for a romantic meal with your partner or even a nice quiet dinner with your loved ones. They also have a DJ and a live saxophonist playing on Fridays and Saturdays which serves as a good start to any weekend and is totally entertaining!! During my visits to Mint Leaf, I was lucky to try out quite a few drinks from their cocktail menu and I have to say the unique concoctions offered in their extensive bar menu were a true delight. Especially the french attitude, pornstar martini and death in the afternoon. Must try cocktails! The mixed non-veg sharing platter is a great dish to begin your meal with, especially the duck and mahi tikka. The tikkas were extremely succulent and cooked to perfection. Even the paneer tikka was nice, and its sauce/dip worth trying. For the main course, I would recommend the chicken jalfrezi and methi maas with the chilli/ garlic naan. The black dal was an absolute stunner. One of my favorites!! The biryani also had some nice authentic Indian flavours to it. Among their deserts, I would recommend the hot chocolate fondant which is a perfect way to end an amazing meal. A must visit in London specially to satiate the Indian cuisine cravings!

My wife and I were visiting London for the New Year and had booked a table at mint leaf after reading their exaggerated comments on their website. First impression on perusing the menu was the choice was poor and the prices high. The wine prices were also exorbitant. To cut a long story short the food was awful. The worst and by a mile the most expensive excuse for indian food we have ever had. Basic and bland. Wish we'd gone for fish and chips. I hope that anyone who considers visiting this restaurant reads this review first.

The 50% off deal was fantastic value for money as the food was good and the decor was very nice. We went on a Friday and had 2 for 1 cocktails during happy hour which were also very good. We each paid under £30 for starters, main course, side dishes, bottle of wine and 6 cocktails. I would definitely recommend Mint Leaf and will be going there again. The waiter wasn't very friendly however he was attentive and asked us many times if we were wanted anything.

I went to this restaurant yesterday. The food was too average, the bar staff where over worked, and the meeter and greeter young girls (as they all looked like hormonal teenagers) were not very helpful and again rushed of their feet and lacked mature social skills (apart from an attractive red-haired one who was extremely friendly and assertive, I even tipped as she was very welcoming and well spoken). I have eaten in many Indian restaurants and this was greatly disappointing. I waited too long for my food, the bar staff looked fed up but their cocktails were good. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, its a complete rip off!!! It is a typical restaurant that cateres to rip off tourist and hotel stayers. The art decor is cheap but trying to pull off an exclusive look. Save your money and go elsewhere!

Went here as I attended an event at the Haymarket Hotel right opposite. They had an offer on for 2 for 1 cocktails before 7pm and 50% off food which I thought was a good deal. I had 2 cocktails, my partner had 2 beers at the bar and we shared a bottle of wine (not from the high end of the list). The 2 for 1 didn't materialise on my cocktails (I guess you have to order them at the same time to qualify) and the quality of the cocktail was poor. The 50% off food only applied, we were told when seated, if we ordered a starter and main. That wasn't made very clear when booking. We both ordered chicken biryani for the main and it was served in the most ridiculously tiny pots. Taste wise it was ok but no better than from our local indian. Total bill was a shade over £82 which I thought was outrageous for what is essentially a posh curry house. It's very dark inside and the atmosphere is bit dull.

I had dinner here last night, and I was really pleased, the staff were very helpful and knew what they were talking about, I went with three other friends, and we tried some lovely dishes, such as the duck and bhoonas, the food was out timely, and the wine was wonderful, its a great venue and would be perfect for large bookings or a party, great place for a first date, as it has a great atmospehre and great mood lighting, I will be back again. It is quite pricey though, so get someone else to pay!
