SquareMeal Review of Meza Tooting Broadway

Bronze Award

Hikmat Antippa started his culinary career at J Sheekey in Covent Garden, before opening his first Meza – a glorified kebab shop with a few tables by Tooting Bec station. Since then, he has added this follow-up eatery on Mitcham Road – an atmospheric and cheerfully pint-sized place, with rug-strewn benches, woven baskets on the wall and a menu of forthright Lebanese classics.

This is expert, authentic food “cooked with heart”, kicking off with an enterprising run through the mezze repertoire – from hummus, tabbouleh and kibbeh to batinjen makdous (oil-pickled aubergines with walnuts) or sautéed chicken livers dressed with pomegranate molasses. To follow, high-protein grills and kebabs are the order of the day, including skilfully de-boned poussin cooked to crusty perfection.

There are gutsy Lebanese wines too, if you need something stronger than mint tea. Keen prices ensure that Meza is “constantly busy”.

Meza – Lebanese Cuisine – is a tiny (5 tables!) storefront restaurant just minutes from Tooting Bec Underground station. The food, mostly grilled in the open kitchen, is hot, tasty, and spicy when needed. Great cold starter plates of aubergine, hummus etc; hot little sausages, kibbe, pastry spinach squares as first courses, and then skewered lamb, chicken and a fish of the day. Very drinkable Lebanese White and Red wine. It looked like they also do takeaway. We made a reservation for 6 on July 4th, though the timing was a little relaxed. Considering the bustle the food service was prompt. For 6 with several starters, and a couple of main courses (it's very much a sharing place), and sufficient wine, the total bill was £120; good value.

This is such a charming wonderful restaurant that I have no idea why I am sharing this especially since there are only 5 tables . The food is wonderful. The grilled chicken is marinated in spices and juicy and tender. The chicken liver sublime. The lamb succulent. The cold starters from grilled smoked aubergine dip to various tomato and chickpeas are yummy. The owner charming. This is a jewel of a restaurant.
