SquareMeal Review of Masala Zone Camden Town

Bronze Award

It wasn’t so long ago that ‘going for a curry’ meant throat-wrenching vindaloos, warm lager & lurid flock wallpaper. Masala Zone makes such provincial clichés seem like ancient history. This sparky, London-only group of Indian ‘brasseries’ is known for its smart service, ethnic soundtrack & folk art-bedecked interiors – the Rajasthani puppets at the Covent Garden branch are a must-see. As the cheap-but-chic member of the Chutney Mary, Veeraswamy and Amaya stable, bowls of bog-standard chicken tikka masala are beneath its dignity. No, Masala Zone is all about fresh, balanced meals inspired by Indian home cooking, market stalls & palace chefs. Kick off with street-food nibbles such as samosas, papdi chaat or jumbo prawns from the grill, ahead of a textbook thali featuring your choice of curry & daily changing accompaniments.

We were visiting London when we went to this restaurant for a dinner. Ordered mangalore green chicken curry thali and rogan josh thali. Special mention for chapatis which are as good as homemade. Both were outstanding. Ambiance and Service is great. Recommend to everyone looking for authentic and fresh Indian food

We came here after getting a recommendation for a baby-friendly restaurant and on a Sunday evening with an 8 month old we had a fantastic experience. The food was delicious and good value for money, but what set it apart was the service. All of the staff were courteous and polite and interacted with our baby. Nothing was too much trouble and one waiter even came over to help distract him whilst we were feeding him. We will certainly be back.

Masala Zone is also one of our regular places to dine out. We have also found this an excellent venue for a larger family group. The staff are always pleasant and ready to explain the meals and understand that some people need a warning where something is particularly spicy. We usually enjoy the regular thali, but on occasions with friends have ordered grand thalis. Both sizes have a nice variety of delicious food, and a choice of rice or chappatis. The drinks menu is also varied. We are rather predictable visitors who do not go past the thalis. However, other reviews have encouraged me to think about ordering a little more courageously in future.

Had their Grand Thali (pick a curry and the rest is done for you). Selected Lamb Vindaloo. Nicely spiced but not as hot as expected – I guess designed for the average palett. I came with side dishes of lentils, aubergene, raita and rice with nan bread, popadom and two chutneys – chilli mint and a sweet chutney. The chiili mint was sublime. My wife had the smaller Thali. All washed down with a bottle of Chillean Merlot and with 12.5% service came to £51.
