SquareMeal Review of Marina Jaks

A former chandlery in a working boatyard on the Solent, Marina Jaks makes the most of animated views of the action around Chichester Harbour. The large leather- & wood-clad space is as classy as the kitchen’s offerings. Seasonal menus might kick off with Cullen skink or sesame-crusted tuna sashimi with wasabi caviar, while the fish theme continues with, say, fruits de mer or Dover sole with crab-crushed potatoes. Meat eaters are equally well served with smoked duck breast salad followed by pork loin with cider or grilled fillet of beef. Be warned: you will need all your navigational skills to find this restaurant either by boat or road, but the prospect of finely crafted food, carefully sourced wines & the bonus of fine-weather, outdoor seating makes it all worthwhile.

We've tried Marina Jaks a few times now … each time in the past, the food has been great but the service has been pretty appalling. So, each time we've given it several months and then tried again. However, no more —- this time (tonight) was the last time ever. This evening we had a truly rubbish meal. To start with, there were two waitresses. One was young, very switched on and lovely. The other was completely mad! She took our orders like she was dosed up on amphetamines mixed in with an unhealthy level of testosterone, with a wild and scary look in her eye, and with a demeanour that was frankly aggressive. So, we thought, rubbish service yet again — but what about the food? The starters were ‘OK’. However, the mains were a disaster. ‘Spaghetti Vongole’ was wet spaghetti that hadn't been drained properly, with what looked very much like a scoop of tinned tomatoes plopped on top, with a small number of clams (most of which were unopened) and absolutely no taste. The ‘beer battered cod’ was thin, with a wet greasy batter that was, frankly, far poorer quality than one would have got from any half decent fish and chip shop. The prices, however, were more in keeping with what one would expect to pay in a proper, decent London restaurant. Hugely disappointing. Our advice —- just keep completely clear … our guess is that it's only a matter of time until the place ends up going under anyway. When oh when will someone open a decent high-end restaurant on Hayling Island???
