SquareMeal Review of Les Associes

‘Vegetarian dishes on request’ says the menu in the window of this homespun bistro, sandwiched between two terraces on a residential street. Having made such a bold statement (for a French restaurant), la carte goes on to offer fine Gallic food, such as onion soup, or le tartare d’avocat au pistou (avocado, olive oil, balsamic, basil, tomato & shallots), fit for meat-avoiders. Others might sit down to fish of the day with pan-fried duck foie gras, pork mignon with plum sauce, or rib-eye with peppercorn sauce – all served with fresh vegetables & potatoes, & none much above £15. While the decor may lack a certain je ne sais quoi, service is warm & graceful, & the all-French wine list is made up mostly of bottles produced on small family vineyards that use sustainable cultivation methods.

great little neighbourhood restaurant
It is a French restaurant run by French people. It is fun. It is a short holiday without the air fare. It is good value and good fun. It is a holiday for an evening especially if you make the effort of speaking French. The food is excellent and the wine list is good. This is a bus ride from Muswell Hill. You have to book as it is popular.

I've lived near this restaurant for many years. I decided to try it out in hope of uncovering a hidden gem. No such luck. The owner-chef was so unpleasant, we almost walked out before ordering. We were the only diners in a dirty, ill-lit room. The food was dreadful. To top it off, he somehow managed to trick us into a ordering a la carte when we were sure we'd ordered a fixed price lunch. A depressing dump. Never again.
