SquareMeal Review of Hixter Bankside

Bronze Award

Mark Hix’s original Hixter in the City didn't last long, but this second branch seems to have hit its stride in time to survive the difficult first two years. Occupying a former metal box factory near the Tate Modern, it’s an unashamedly cool urban destination complete with Tracey Emin neon sculptures, girders, pendant lights and bare brick walls. Like its stablemate Tramshed in Shoreditch, the menu is all about chicken and beef, though they do serve fish and seafood too. Roast barn-reared chooks arrive at the table perched upright with stuffing and chips on the side, while the Glenarm carcasses (aged in Himalayan salt) yield all manner of ‘mighty-marbled’ steaks. To start, try ceviche with crispy lotus root or Wiltshire burrata with chilli and grilled sourdough, and save room for a helping of ‘credit crunch ice cream’. The “great bar” is as much of a draw as the dining room, though it's not as hip and frenetic as the Soho original – some might see that as an advantage, of course.

A great, fun venue doing simple foods in an amazing and innovative way
In my opinion, this restaurant specialises in doing good, simple food in a funky and different way. I really like it and take friends a lot. My personal favoruites are the squid, and the whole chicken. The perfect sharers for date night or a catch up with friends. The drink menu is certainly not to be sniffed at either.

It’s all about the steak……………… (and chicken)
Read Nuzy Sayani’s review of Hixter Bankside Nestled behind Tate Modern is Mark Hix’s steak and chicken restaurant. Whilst the South Bank is a magnet for culture, it has taken a while for the restaurant scene to catch up making the south side of the river a vibrant and essential part of London. I visited Hixter on a Thursday evening and the former metal factory was busy but not overly crowded. The décor reflects its industrial past with exposed brick work and metal but is warmed up by Tracey Emin’s brightly coloured neons and an eclectic selection of contemporary art. Start the evening off with a cocktail in Mark’s Bar that has a tantalising variety of classic and seasonal cocktails and a comprehensive spirits menu. To start the evening on the right note, I started with a Celebration, a mix of rum, gin, Mark’s redcurrant syrup and grapefruit. The affable bar manager Miles offered to mix us a few cocktails off the menu that went down very easily. I liked the refreshing combination of white port, fresh lemon and tonic water. The “snax” menu has lots of choice and we nibbled on chicken popcorn and cock n’ bull croquettes. The bar is a great place for a drink and a quick bite but be warned you may sink into the distressed leather sofas! We ate in the spacious main dining room and the only real choice you need to make is whether to eat the marbled and aged beef or the specially reared chicken. The steak was full of flavour and the chicken succulent served with reassuringly crunchy chips. The restaurant manager Alex recommended a well- rounded red wine from Duoro by Quinta da la Rosa who bottle it exclusively for the Hix restaurants. We rounded off the evening with some credit crunch ice cream that was accompanied by a warm chocolate sauce and an apple pie This is a good place to bring children and those under ten eat for free from the aptly named Calves’ Menu when accompanied by an adult. I recommend Hixter for great cocktails; well executed food and a relaxed ambience. Chicken and Beef, what's not to like?
Having eaten at Tramshed in Spitalfields, I knew pretty much what to expect 2nd time around and it certainly didn't disappoint. We went to this branch because we had been to an exhibition at the Tate Modern and it was a short walk (into a pretty dead area on the weekend, not sure if it is more lively during the week). There were a few groups having Sunday brunch but not the restaurant was not very busy. We all started with a Twitter and Bisted cocktail, grapefruit mixed with Campari and a hint of Pedro Ximenez sherry which was nice and sour, so woke up the tastebuds but for some reason took nearly 30 minutes to come, despite us being the only people waiting for drinks - not sure what happened there, when I prompted them after 15 minutes the waiter smiled very pleasantly and confirmed that yes, they were on their way.......just not very quickly. We started with the beefballs and cock 'n' bull croquettes (a firm favourite) - the beefballs were covered in a spicy tabasco tomato sauce, soured cream and grated cheese (a winning combination). My husband and sister shared the roast chicken, chips, stuffing and gravy - and I stole lots of crispy chicken skin. The chicken was Succulent, flavoursome, the stuffing was very crumbly and what didn't go in their mouths went all over the table, the fries good and crispy and good gravy, all very enjoyable. I had the hamburger, which was good, nothing special, just good quality ground beef and great fries. I would go back to one of the Hixter/Tramshed stable restaurants if I was in the area, you know what you are going to get when you walk through the door.

We went to Hixter Bankside on its second evening. It’s located near Union Street Café, though proved to be a little hard to find. Having eventually located it the vibe is rather like its near neighbour, in that they are both in old industrial buildings, have decent amounts of open space, cool staff etc. Union Street is a bit more distressed industrial chic, Hixter a bit more wannabe art gallery, but both are perfectly acceptable. Apparently, though clearly I can’t confirm this, there is also some very ‘interesting’ (rude) wallpaper in the ladies toilets. The staff were a little under prepared, but then it was only their second day, and everyone tried really hard; however, watching some of the attempts to carve chickens etc. suggested that some of them were fairly new to this. Everyone is very polite and pleasant though, and all (except for managers and chefs) dressed in black with t-shirts with slogans/pictures on the back. And, despite the unprepared air, there weren’t any problems, things arrived as expected and there weren’t any awkward gaps. The menu is pretty simple, at least for main courses, and generally you will be eating roast chicken or steak. But let’s do starters first – you don’t get offered bread beforehand and water only comes in jugs not bottles – and I had smoked salmon with soda bread, nice quality ingredients, but not really a test as if you get the ingredients right its hard to go too far wrong. Main course was a half share in a medium cooked chateaubriand – it’s excellent quality (as good as anywhere in London), though the price is unfortunately towards the Mayfair end of the scale; however, the chicken, and most of the other steaks, are far more reasonable. The steak was perfectly decent, but they didn’t get the wonderful charred taste you’ll get at the likes of City Social, it was just a bit bland. It came with chips, which sadly were a bit too mass produced for my liking and we added excellent salt and vinegar fried onion rings and garlic field mushrooms. Dessert was blueberry cheesecake – I admit to dreading it thinking it might be unimaginative, but it was absolutely excellent and probably the best I’ve had anywhere, really light and full of genuine flavour and with the welcome addition of white chocolate swirls. Value for money is dependent on the choices you make; we had drinks (gin and vodka) beforehand, wine and also went for the priciest options and added lots of side dishes, and despite that still managed to only spend around £80 per head, but with some better planning you could get a good evening for probably not much more than half that. Like Mr Schwarzenegger I’ll be back.
