Spitalfields is where it all started for Hawksmoor founders Will Beckett and Huw Gott in 2006 and while their newer restaurants became ever-more glamorous, this blueprint was still recognisably a City steakhouse.

A recent refurb has brought it into line with its glossy siblings with acres of green leather and an all-round sheen, but what still sets Hawksmoor apart from the competition it spawned is the hubbub of happy diners anticipating some of the best steak in London, smoky from the chargrill and imbued with more character than the cast list of Game of Thrones.

Non-carnivores should investigate such fresh-tasting treats as a mound of white crab meat piled on to thin crumpets, or three breadcrumb-scattered scallops served in the shell with a white port and garlic sauce.

There’s no denying that Hawksmoor is expensive, but portions are so big that a steak and a couple of sides (treacle-sweet bacon, squeaky spring greens) should hit the spot for most appetites - though who could resist the lure of peanut butter shortbread topped with a smooth scoop of salted-caramel ice cream and concealing a well of syrupy sauce?

Hawksmoor Spitalfields was ground zero for the now legendary, far-reaching steakhouse, and to many it remains the best embodiment of Hawksmoor's indulgent spirit. This original branch opened back in 2006 and it retains the same moody charm today, thanks to signature forest green leather banquettes, exposed brickwork and herringbone natural wood floors. Stained glass panels in the windows create dappled light on one side of the room, whilst a well-stocked bar props up the other corner. 

Truthfully though, no-one goes to Hawksmoor to admire the interiors - this is the epitomy of a restaurant where the food speaks for itself. Hawksmoor offers a wide variety of menu options to suit all comers these days, but the authentic Hawksmoor experience is still all about the steaks. Scan the blackboard as soon as you walk in to see what steaks are available - everything is priced per 100 grams, but each steak is weighed and then written up on the board, so you can pick the perfect one for you, whether it's a hefty slab of bone-in prime rib or a dainty fillet steak. All your favourite sauces are available too, alongside extras like grilled bone marrow, triple-cooked chips, creamed spinach and buttered greens. 

If you're not a big steak eater or you're just not feeling it, there's plenty on the menu besides. Hawksmoor's handy Spitalfields location attracts all comers, and the menu reflects that with plenty of other options, from sea bream with chilli, lemon and garlic, to ricotta dumplings with peas, broad beans and asparagus. Hawksmoor's puddings are also worth saving room for, not least the famous sticky toffee pudding, or the salted caramel rolos, which you can take away for later snacking. 

There are also Sunday roasts and set menus available at certain times, as well as an enormous wine and cocktail list.

It was a wonderful dinner. You are always guaranteed quality service and attention to detail at Hawksmoor. The only place to have Sunday lunch. A great British tradition

Not as good as other branches of the Hawksmoor family

I have been to Hawksmoore in Manchester and that was superb so I was excited to go to the Spitalfields restaurant and unfortunately did not live upto my expectations. 

Menu was limited. Alot of the menu was sold out. We felt the value for money vs quality of food was disapointing, Filet steak was almost burnt and dry on the outside, although the steak was rare in the middle. We were never explained the concept of the menu and therefore we guessed  meat was charged by the weight. We were unable to order certain items on the menu after 5pm, which was confusing given half the menu was sold out and they had the rest in stock (burger). I ordered a filet of steak which was 250g however I was charged for 300g, I probably would have chosen a different cut of beef had this been explained. The sides we had were spinach which was excellent but the tripple cooked chips where hard, dry and tasted as though they were cooked from frozen. We also had garlic mushrooms which, for the price, not that exciting. 

To summarise - we had a good time, the staff were friendly and attentive. Food was disappointing for what we paid. We probably wouldn't return.

Has to be steak!

Visited with three colleagues for an early evening booking. Good choice of starters to set ourselves up. Splendid steaks as you would expect (bone in sirloin,ribeye, fillet)  and the vegetable sides did not let us down (often overlooked part of a meal at a steak restaurant).

Desserts were top notch (cheesecake in particular) and were paired with a Tokay dessert wine.

Wine list was varied and would suit most pockets. Malbec is recommended.

Service was friendly, professional and prompt. This was our second visit to this venue and we will return

I was looking forward to the sunday roast here as heard great things but I was SO disappointed. The meat was so fatty and chewy and the sides were not exciting at all. They need to put cauliflower cheese as a side. I honestly wouldn't go back which is a shame to say.

Superb steaks
The Hawksmoor concept is now 12 years old and its empire spans 8 locations in 3 different cities, but each time I visit – and regardless of location – I am reminded just how good and consistent the experience is. A recent weekday night saw a group of us descend on the Spitalfields branch. This was the original location in the Hawksmoor stable, but it has benefited from a recent refurb. All the restaurants seem to manage to pull off that tricky combination of cool but traditional. Put another way, imagine exposed brickwork with maps of old London adorning them – much like the clubs of Pall Mall updated for the 21st Century. Beyond the vibe, it’s the food that draws the punters in. We are talking about seriously good steak, first described with a knowledgeable passion by the serving staff and then cooked to perfection by the chefs. Both the bone-in-prime rib and the porterhouse shared by our group showed lovely succulence as well as depth and intensity of flavour. The enjoyment was only enhanced by the sides. I have raved previously about Hawksmoor’s mac and cheese, but this is a wonderfully enjoyable dish both on a standalone basis and as a steak pair. Going back a step, the bone marrow with pickled onion starter (pictured) was probably the night’s dish to die for. The sweet fatty richness of the dish proved a delight, especially when combined with the inspired choice to drink an aged rosé champagne alongside. Hawksmoor has a decent list of wines priced from £40 to £225/bottle, but we availed ourselves of the reasonable corkage option, at £5/bottle, and brought our own. The experience ain’t cheap, but well worth every penny. Message to Hawksmoor: just keep up the good work!
