SquareMeal Review of Gordon's Wine Bar

When Gordon’s first opened, talk over the claret or hock might have turned to Van Gogh’s death, Tchaikovsky’s new ballet or the opening of the Forth Bridge. More than 120 years down the line, it’s remarkable that this bar is still going strong. Crepuscular, candlelit cellars will appeal to those who value raffish character above clean-lined corporate clones. Good for a first date, a tête-à-tête or Merlot with your mates, the wine list offers great value at around £20: crisp Portuguese rosado, Muscat from Bulgaria, cava, Marlborough Sauvignon, sherries & ports aplenty. Gordon’s is open for breakfast, but its lunchtime spread is the big draw for office workers, tourists & nostalgia geeks: cold cuts, bakes, winter-warmer pies & summery salads have distinctly retro appeal at this sepia-toned charmer.

Being a massive wine fan I'm obviously going to love this place but the wine is to die for. Great choice, qualilty and they even fill it right to the brim if you buy it buy the glass. You'd kind of expect that being London's olderst wine bar but MAN, they don't half do the best cheese, pork pie and buffet food in there too. The place has such a great atmosphere and, to me, offers two different vibes; an upbeat, chatty vibe outside which, with the umbrellas and plastic patio furniture, makes you feel like you're on holiday. Inside, on the otherhand, has a more intimate, romantic vibe; get stuck in a corner with your table lit by candlelight and you're there all night! It's my all time favourite place to drink in London.

This place definitely has the ‘Wow’ factor. Visiting friends from overseas are always exhilarated when I take them here. The wine bar/restaurant is in a cave/wine cellar, and is adorned by lit candles in wine bottles and and interesting artefacts on the walls. And there is a very pleasant outside area, surrounded by interesting modern and old architecture, and gardens. The wine is excellent, and the selection of cheeses and cold meats is also very good. Its a unique experience to go there.

Gordon's is an institution. It's the best place in central London for after work drinks! Walk down the steep old stairs and you're in a dimly lit cellar/cave that's lit by candlelight. The wine menu is relatively small for a wine bar but has all the good standard wines. The food bar is great – the cheese plates are amazing and cough with big chunks of baguette. A great accompaniment to a bottle or 2 of wine. When the weather's nice, the best place to be is outside where you can enjoy the sunshine next to the small part at Embankment. Sometimes I wish this place was a hidden secret so it wasn't so busy but that's just me being selfish!

Gordon's is a gem and very special. The vaulted cellars down at the Embankment are fantastic. Food is simple but very good and the wine-list is solid without being too overpriced, especially considering the location, terrace in summer and brilliant interior in winter. A truely super place!
