SquareMeal Review of Gaucho O2

The glitz factor has been amplified at this flagship of the Argentinian steakhouse chain, set over three glimmering floors. Yes, you’ll find Gaucho’s usual monochrome interior, with the signature cowhide-upholstered chairs & walls, & huge crystal chandeliers throughout – only here it’s bigger & better. There’s a cocktail lounge, VIP suite & basement wine-tasting room, all aimed at seducing the concert crowds & expense-account diners, for cheap it ain’t. The menu mirrors that found elsewhere in the group, so Gaucho’s famous ceviches (citrus-cured fish & seafood) whet the appetite for the main event: slabs of expertly cooked beef in all manner of cuts & sizes. Sauces & sides cost extra, so the bill soon mounts up even before you’ve added a bottle of Malbec from the unmissable wine list.

About

Gaucho at the o2 Arena is a luxurious experience to say the least, nestled within the popular entertainment venue on the Greenwich peninsula. The restaurant is great for pre or post-concert dinners, replete with VIP suites for the ultimate exclusive experience.

The moody sunken cocktail bar is ideal for casual drink of Belvedere Bartezek vodka martinis or Mount Gay black barrel Mai Tais surrounded by the signature Gaucho cowhides, illuminated by the dazzling bejewelled lighting features for a completely luxe atmosphere. Then head over to the mesmerising balcony dining lounge for indulgent steak dinners and more.

The private VIP suite is inside the arena itself, for easy access to the entertainment venues. The restaurant itself is also host to some stunning event spaces for a variety of occasions to be had. From private suites for intimate dinner and show experiences to larger scale events in the show-stopping balcony area, Gaucho’s expert team is capable of bringing any event to life. The event spaces can comfortably seat up to 100, for business meeting and private lunches, or 150 standing guests, for receptions.

Starting or rounding off an exhilarating concert experience with a proper Argentinian feast is an excellent choice. Chow down of flavour-packed plates of prime cuts of meat of your choice or share platters of indulgent sirloins, T-bone, and Lomo steaks with family and friends. Bring a mighty appetite to fully allow the food to tantalise your taste buds.

Whet your appetite with yellowtail tiraditos drizzled with creamy truffle mayo and yuzu soy pearls or delicious seared diver scallops served on a pretty bed of cauliflower puree. For mains, select your choice of steak from Cuadril to Ancho, featuring béarnaise or chimichurri sauces, to complement the rich meaty offerings. If you’ve got space to feed your sweet tooth, a dulce de leche dessert is a must.

Food Cold

The Steak was very good, however all the sides were stone cold (Brockley, Chips and Humita), strongly suggesting they had been sitting in the kitchen too long).

Not very happy either to have asked for the final account so that we could get to our booked show, only to see the waitress wander around with our account in her hand, whilst she cleared tables and offering water to other guests along the way.

£146 pounds for 2 mains and (2) drinks is fine, but the service should be of a much higher standard and most  the food should definitely be hot.

Be ready to pay but it's worth it
We arrived prior to a concert on Sunday 8th December and were told they couldn't find our reservation but luckily we were fairly early so could get a table. Not off to a good start I thought. The restaurant itself although quite dark is very classy and hits the right mood. Although our starters weren't anything to shout home about, I had the crab and avocado tostada. I say avocado but there were only 4 slithers of green in amongst what should have been very tasty crab but sadly it lacked seasoning and was overpowered by raw onion and tomato. Our steaks however were superb. I opted for a rump cut this time which was juicy, cooked perfectly and one of the best steaks I have eaten, almost over taking my normal choice of a fillet cut. The shared spinach, chips and sweetcorn were just the right amount. Our wine was delicious and not being able to fit a dessert in we opted for whisky and brandy which were both delicious. All in all a great start to our evening and will definitely be returning. Top tip - book in advance as they were turning people away when we departed, very popular and I can now see why.

Suprisingly good!
I've never really been a fan of chain restaurants even those at the upmarket end and therefore despite having recommended the Gaucho for clients on many occasions, mainly due to its location at the 02, I had never eaten there myself and was in honesty prepared to be underwhelmed. I was refreshingly surprised at the entire package on offer and will certainly be revisiting. I enjoyed the best steak I have eaten in years and that includes my regular visits to the Hawksmoor Restaurants. The decor was relevant to the concert / evening environment that most would be using the restaurant for. I loved the cowhide, glass and chrome and wasnt expecting the layout in the bar to be as good as it is. There are some very comfortable and welcoming circular booths upstairs in the restaurant and the restaurant had a good buzz and was full. The range of steaks is better than I have ever experienced on any menu and I opted for a lower priced rump based on the lean description and was treated to a piece of meat that seemed to think it was a filet. Just magnificent quality and taste. The Sommelier guided me through the Malbecs which offered something superb for every budget. Overall it wasnt cheap, probably more than I had expected but then the service, menu and wines were far outweighed expectation, so all in all I would certainly recommend and will return.
