SquareMeal Review of Gaucho City

From the awning over the stairs to the buttoned black leather within, Henry Ford’s favourite colour is much in evidence at this stygian steakhouse in the vault where the Bank of England once stored its bullion. It’s dark & it’s sexy, with shades of Addams-family gloom perked up by cowhide upholstery that adds a frivolous touch of yee-ha! to the show. But it’s beef, not leather, that makes Gaucho the capital’s favourite Argentinian since Evita: 400g spiral cuts of marinated rump, slow-grilled chateaubriand to share & entraña fina (succulent marbled skirt of beef) all make an impact. Spatchcocked chicken & black cod cater for less red-blooded appetites, & there are a few options for stray veggies. The ‘prodigious’ Argentinian wine list is a vinous education, with fine & rare bottles in abundance, plus masses of beef-friendly Malbec.

About

Gaucho City, set in the historic gold vaults of the Old Bank of England takes patrons on an exciting journey through Argentina with their luxurious menu of prime cut steaks and fine wines. The restaurant is beautifully designed, with plenty of dedicated areas for any occasion. From the cocktail lounge to the private dining rooms, and the casual dining space for patrons on both floors, there is something to suit everyone. Since its opening way back in 2008, Gaucho City has evolved with times, but still remained a hotspot for local patrons and tourists.

Across from the beautiful Leadenhall market, in the heart of the Square Mile, the location could not be better. There are great links to the rest of London with Bank and Monument underground stations nearby.

The restaurant itself features sleek and modern décor and furniture with an impressive display of Argentinian wines in the private room. The restaurant is adorned in earth tones and textures inspired by Argentinian landscapes, creating a moody atmosphere of luxury. The kitchen is a dramatic affair with theatre style dining and ringside action.

For the largest selection of Argentine wines in Europe, Gaucho’s has got an extensive litany of the country’s finest red and whites, including their own vineyard specialities. Cocktails are not neglected either, with the candle-lit lounge for pre and post-steak drinks.

Private dining events can also be hosted at this spacious, luxurious event on the ground floor of this beautiful restaurant. The elegant room features a traditional banquet style seating area with an entrance opening out to the bar floor. You can an impressive social event or business conference in the private dining rooms, cocktail lounge, or conference room fitted with AV facilities. Whatever the occasion, there will be some indulgent steaks of Ribeye, Sirloin, Lomo, and more to keep you fuelled.

The steak here is melt in the mouth and the staff are really helpful. It is a chain but one of the best ones I have eaten at. The decor is quite typical for a steak restaurant but it doesn't detract from how good the food is. It is probably middle of the road in terms of cost. .

An impromptu rendezvous at Gaucho City
A beautiful steak with a sultry glass of wine is a little piece of heaven for us, making Gaucho a long-standing favourite restaurant. In the midst of year end processing at work, getting ready for Christmas at home and dealing with our two-year old having tonsilitis, I booked a last minute table at Gaucho City for a let's-chat-and-forget-about-the-world moment. With their traditionally tucked-away entrance and calming ambience, I truly felt miles away from the everyday hustle and bustle. The service was professional, friendly and assertive (just what you need for a quick lunch). The menu was deliciously tempting and we both settled on the ribeye with a complimentary glass of mulled wine (very festive). I can honestly say that the steak melted in my mouth (cooked medium rare) and, although brief, the whole experience has left another lasting impression on me.

Good, quite pricy, full of rather beefy guys, I enjoyed this place and would go again. You know what your going to get and as ever it did not disappoint.

As usual with Gaucho a fantastic steak with a beautiful looking restuarant and great service. The one gripe I had and this is being really pedantic was that the pasties for the starter was over cooked. Also it a real pain to find I asked 5 taxi drivers and none of them knew where the place was! But once there the place is great, would go ever night if I could.
