About

Franco’s is something of an institution in London, having originally sprung up in St James’s in 1945 and believed to be one of the first, and certainly one of the oldest, Italian restaurants in the capital. Open all day, this laid-back restaurant serves everything from a hearty breakfast through to an elegant and authentic dinner, while the all-day bar allows guests to drop by for a drink and a bite whenever the mood takes them.

The décor is smart but decidedly old-school, with white tablecloths, black and white photography, studded banquet seating and loud, floral wallpaper. During the warmer months, alfresco tables at the front of the restaurant quickly fill up, providing the perfect vantage point from which to watch the comings and goings of Jermyn Street.

There’s a menu to suit every occasion and meal type, including set, vegan and vegetarian offerings, but if you’re in town for dinner, then the a la carte menu features a luxurious selection of classic Italian dishes. To start, look out for Parma ham with cantaloupe melon, octopus carpaccio with fennel and orange, and burrata with peas and broad beans. Next, a pasta and soup course features things like lobster linguine, crab and lemon risotto and pea soup with prawns. While main courses range from pan fried wild seabass with samphire, artichokes, cherry tomatoes and clams to beef rossini with sauteed spinach, foie gras and black truffle.

An extensive wine list spans wine-making regions from all over Italy, from Sicily to Tuscany, and even includes separate sections for different styles of wine, whether you’re after a bottle or Barolo or Barbaresco. A collection of classic, signature and after-dinner cocktails are perfect for pre- or post-dinner drinking, including a dedicated negroni list for lovers of the quintessential Italian cocktail. Plenty of aperitifs and digestifs are also on offer.

Wonderful from start to finsih

A lovely outdoor experience where the food and the service were equally excellent – just wonderful, especially after being locked down.  And staff were vey understanding where Sqauremeal had booked our table for a wrong time and not told them.  Superb.

Prezzo, Leatherhead
I keep going back to Prezzo Leatherhead as the food is delicious and the service is impeccable. On my last visit I tried the spaghetti with king prawns. The dish arrived with a large chilly on top. I would recommend it, as it was exquisite and just hot enough.

Old school charm
It's always hard to name a great Italian in London, especially given how opinion on Italian cuisine divides even the Italians in town! Is it L'Anima, Cecconis, River Café, Zucca, Murano, Locanda L? Franco's is not quite the aforementioned, but the team do a decent job of getting close. It ticks the boxes for a superb lunch venue - good viewing, outside seating (if you're two), bright and airy, top notch service and good simple food done very well. Expensive, but worth it and a wine list that is both innovative and where decent value can be found - just ask. It's a surefire staple that it will not disappoint especially if you haven't been before.

Eye catching nude (painting) at the entrance promises some food delights. Corkage sccepted without a quibble. Fresh and tasty Italian food.

I found Franco's on Square Meal as a convenient location after going to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. For a Friday evening it was pretty full, and the accommodated us though we were quite early for our booking. Service was efficient, and we had 2 courses each in good time, without being hurried along. Good sized beef carpaccio had mushrooms underneath and lots of shaved truffle on top. 2 mains were both pasta; mine was little tubes ( a bit too al dente) with duck ragout. Wine by the glass was real central London prices (£12!). But, overall it was efficient and tasted good, not too noisy and with pleasant staff. Quite a wild painting at the reception!

Uninspired
The Lamb dish on the specials board came with super heated veg that contained a large amount of water, which diluted the sauce. The veg totally lacked any flavour. The waiters encourage guests to have a side salad, which did not turn up, but were charged for.

Revisit Unrequited It has been a while since I had last lunched here, but it was for a similar scenario and with another work counterpart, who was also taking advantage of the proximity of Franco's to their offices just off the Pall Mall. On the surface much seemed the same and all was well certainly, starting from the reasonably cheerful welcome at the reception, to my arrival at the table where my host was already seated and waiting with his bloody mary. I promptly followed by ordering a virgin mary which came quickly as the service was cordial and efficient. However when the food started to arrive it was then that I felt something must have been awry. The specials starter of artichoke and bottarga pasta was distinctly bland, so much so that I really had to try adding pepper, salt and olive oil, somehow anticipating that a sort of tipping point would suddenly come about, releasing flavours which were in some way hidden. But unfortunately I was not enlightened however much I tried. And so to the main which was the fish and again this was just adequate really, rather than what should be an inspired sea bass fillet. There were some sides which were probably the best part of the meal that day, but part of me was wondering if the chef was perhaps on his annual ski break. Franco's remains a pleasant and slick enough venue, and though I was not the host that day and thus not the paymaster, I recall that is is a suitably pricey place in keeping with its Mayfair surrounds. And so I was disappointed overall, but given my previous visit had been much more impressive, I may yet still give it a chance (to redeem itself) or rather, not refuse the invite of another work counterpart, if Franco's is to be their choice of venue again.

Excellent service and a delicious meal. The veal was outstanding following by a traditional tiramisu equally as good. The prices are a little on the steep side , especially wine by the glass.
