SquareMeal Review of El Vino Fleet Street

These convivial wine bars boast some of the capital’s most historic locations - the Cannon Street branch, for example, is housed in a former smugglers’ haunt that survived the Great Fire of London. Some of the venues wear their place in history lightly, their tongue-and-groove panelling updated with a lick of Farrow & Ball; others revel in the patina of their polished wood and Cluedo-style candelabras. Despite the tavern-style feel of these pubby bars, the wine list reads like that of a high-minded restaurant, with loads by the glass and some gems, such as a 2013 Pouilly Fuissé, also available in magnum. It’s global in scope but favours Iberian and South American wines to match the Spanish-style menu - tapas such as piquillo peppers stuffed with mint-infused whipped goats’ curd, or aromatic pork skewers with spicy mojo for dipping venture beyond the usual tortilla and croquetas. Plenty for the modern Londoner, then.

Always reliably excellent
Having frequented El Vino on several occasions (and written several reveiws) I have now managed to encourage others to become patrons. The last occasion was for a small group, with pre-ordered food - all of which was punctual, tasty and reliably good service.

Remaining a favourite
Remaining a favourite for a lunchtime - always arrive early (12:30-ish) as it is busy when you leave an hour or so later. Obviously I'm not the only one liking it here, so reserving a table is a good idea. The Tapas at 5 choices from a large selection, priced at £20.00 for 2 people is a gem of a choice. The staff remain friendly - and that is so often more important than the menu selection, and of course the wines are also what it is also all about. Great all around - looking forward to the next visit.

Good special offer
Following the recent refurbishment of El Vino, a special "re-opening" offer was available Not sure how long it will last for but for the price of £20.00 per 2 people, one may choose 5 items from a good selection of Tapas (large-ish portions), and 2 glasses of wine are included in this price. This was a lunch visit, and I'm not sure if it is also available during the evening. More than that, the staff remain attentive, the owner/manager has a pleasant personality, and the place has retained its originality and atmosphere. Will continue to return either to eat or just drink.

Worth a visit
I particularly like El Vino as it reminds me of somewhere in a Charles Dickens novel - not the run of the mill, "themed" décor, but genuine old-world, dark wood, small but not too small, and cosey. The food is good quality, and wine list fairly extensive and the staff friendly and efficient. A nice place to socialize or perhaps "catch up" with a business contact perhaps, without being pretentious.
