SquareMeal Review of Devonshire Terrace

Bronze Award

Aimed with precision at its predominantly corporate clientele, Devonshire Terrace is an airy, tastefully attired Corney & Barrow bar-restaurant that comes equipped with retractable walls, allowing the space to morph into multiple configurations. Breakfast covers the spectrum, from a full English to French pastries, but the kitchen’s focus is lunchtime, when meat and fish get equal billing. The “good quality” choices include prime British ingredients such as seared wood pigeon (well-matched with honey-poached plums and rémoulade) and Devon Rose beef, alongside flavours from further afield: a Thai-style steamed cod in tangy lemongrass and coconut broth, perhaps. Come the evening, tapas sharing platters take over, with a French-leaning wine list providing the accompaniment. The design would never win a personality contest, but the trump card is alfresco dining: a canopied terrace on one side is mirrored by another within Devonshire Square, flooded with natural light but covered by a vast glass roof.

Lunch
Enjoyable lunch as the location and atmosphere is pleasant. Food was good, although presentation a bit mixed, from very nice to basic. But good overall and reasonably priced for the location.

Delightful Devonshire Terrace
Fantastic place for post dinner and drinks with friends in the City. From start to finish we were treated impeccably from the host and the waiters and waitresses...exquisite food and top notch wine list too. Would definitely return and recommend.

Thoughts on the Terrace
I had booked the Terrace several times but this was the first time I had tried it for myself. We were a party of three and were shown to two round tables side by side which wasn't ideal, so we moved one table ourselves and sat around one of them. Staff were attentive and polite but had no idea who was looking after the table and when orders had been taken. I ordered what was supposed to be a rib-eye steak, but it wasn't. I should have queried it at the time but didn't, but I did so afterwards and received a comrehensive email telling me where their meat is sourced and how much it weighs etc. However I was not served a rib-eye steak, and paid £18 for a thin, indifferent steak.

Where was the rib eye
Staff were confused – we had several requests to get drinks etc. – there didn't seem to be any synergy, although they were polite enough. Three of us were asked to sit at two round tables side by side, so we moved one ourselves and just sat at one table. I ordered a rib eye steak but that isn't what I got. It was a thin, rather ordinary steak. It was cooked as requested, but it certainly wasn't worth £18.00. I won't be going back.

Sticky in the City
If I worked nearby I'd probably be a regular at Devonshire Terrace, but as I don't I doubt I will make the effort again. I battled through the heaving Devonshire Square development which has been refurb-ed, re-purposed or recycled, whatever the term is en vogue and ask for a table outside on the terrace. As they've all gone, I am invited to plonk myself down on an upholstered bench in the more relaxed zone which suits me fine until it dawns on me that the outside area is actually inside, under a glass roof which is acting like an enormous greenhouse and heating us up like little palm tree seedlings in Kew Hot house. I am reminded of the old saying “horses sweat, men perspire and women gently glow” and think it should be amended to include “office workers sweetly swelter”. The menu is reassuringly City-familiar with a something-for-everyone approach. It's basically Corney & Barrow by another name. I mean it, it really, literally is as it is owned by C&B; I've just seen it on their website. So we had club sandwiches which I knew we could eat despite the awkward low tables and they were perfectly serviceable if nothing special and I'm sure the usual range of steaks, pastas, salads and yes, there they are, fishcakes, would be the same. Filling enough, functional, not going to embarrass you if you go with friends or clients, but probably not going to rock your world. For £30 for lunch for 2 (sarnies with fries and cokes each) and very pleasant service (unhurried but still reasonable despite the crowds) it's darn good value for a relaxed, if slightly sticky, lunch in the City.

Service was good and the staff were attentive and helpful. Good food selection, and was reasonable. It was a little noisy.

No surprises and no disappointments
Enjoyed the relaxed, airy atmosphere of this modern eaterie. Reliable menu selection, if a little predictable, well complemented by excellent & discrete service. Recommended for those seeking an escape from heavy food and boistrous City institutions.

Hard to Fault
The food is good without being exceptional. Very well presented and perfectly cooked. I have never had a poor meal. I think the wine list is particularly good – The Nelson Estates Shiraz is delicious. It is a little dark inside but it is lovely to eat on the terrace where you feel you are outside when in fact you have a roof over your head – handy in the summer rain. I keep coming back and in a City packed full of good restaurants that shows they are doing most things very well. Recommended.
