SquareMeal Review of Cinnamon Kitchen City

We’re big fans of chef Vivek Singh’s high-end modern Indian cuisine and this offshoot of his flagship Cinnamon Club earns him yet more applause. Like its sibling in Battersea, it’s been cleverly designed to suit its surrounds – in this case a former spice warehouse, done out in industrial-chic style. The decking outside is a bonus: perfect for alfresco dining whatever the vagueries of the weather, thanks to its covered courtyard.

Inside, the chefs prepare a series of “wonderful, aromatic” dishes, characterised by subtle spicing and knockout flavours. Our most recent visit showed off a reduced sized menu that loses nothing for being a touch smaller, packed as it is with Cinnamon classics. Highlights included both Madras hot shrimps with a curried yoghurt and chargrilled king prawns, juicy and blackened from the grill.

You won't find a better rendition of the deliciously savoury lamb seekh kebab, while the samosa chaat is a moreish rendition of a Punjabi street-food style samosa richly flavoured with curried chickpeas, juicy pomegranate arils and tangy tamarind chutney. To follow, grilled pink aubergine with sesame tamarind sauce and peanut crumble had unctuous depth, while the classic Lucknow-style chicken biryani is softly comforting, and delicate pan-seared cod is complemented rather than overpowered with a punchy Kerala curry sauce and zesty lemon rice.

Don't miss a dependable selection of hot, buttery breads, rice and creamy dhal and, if you've still got room, puds are beautifully done, our favourites being ginger toffee pudding with cinnamon ice cream or a superb kulfi. To drink, expect fruity Asian-inspired cocktails from the Anise Bar and a thoughtfully chosen wine list that includes a well-chosen selection of spice-friendly bottles. Factor in reliably good service, notable afternoon teas and weekend bbq brunches (from Friday) and you have a City stalwart that’s well worth repeat visits, borne out by its increasing popularity at weekends.

I love Cinnamon Kitchen

I'm a huge fan of Cinnamon Kitchen. Always the warmest welcome... the food is incredible... the cocktails are fantastic... the wine list has something for everyone and the service is always of a high standard. The restaurant is always so busy and the atmosphere is lovely. I've never had a bad experience there... and I've always left with a very full and happy stomach!

I look forward to many more meals at Cinnamon Kitchen!

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME. FELT INVISIBLE AND LIKE AN INCONVENIENCE. House of Holi experience, meal and non existent “special cocktail”

1 star for the food, 1 star for the Holi immersive experience. 0 stars for front of house, service, wait time. This was a long awaited catch up with my best friend who travelled from Milton Keynes for todays reservation. We booked a “House of Holi” 30min experience + 5 course meal and “special Holi cocktail” via Design My Night. We were made to feel invisible throughout the entire dining experience; from the moment we walked in, the front desk was empty. After waiting a few minutes a woman with a mouth full of food walks to the desk, no eye contact, no “hello, welcome to Cinnamon Kitchen how can I help you”, just a mouth full of food as she cleaned her teeth with her tongue, head bent to her desk. Without looking up, she asked for our name. Shocking and disgusting. Restaurant was next to empty with 4 other tables eating, more staff than guests. We sat down at 3:45pm and asked for tap water. I had to walk to front desk at 4:30pm again which was vacant, and found a man lighting candles. I was annoyed now and explained how long we were waiting 45 minutes just for tap water. We also emailed 2 weeks in advance to say one of us were gluten and lactose intolerant. The emailed response reassured us that we can advise our waiter on the day. We had no waiter. The man who knew we asked for water disappeared. The sale woman who was eating at front desk asked me about the intolerances and looked at me with a frown before returning with a grubby allergen list, and not only was this NOT a gluten free or lactose free menu, but I had to work out myself what to order from her grubby paper. We had to flag down another totally different waiter to ask to order. He was the only person who had customer service skills. He apologised for the delay but asked me why I ordered the Holi menu as there was nothing I could eat from it. We explained our email and the response and were told it will be fine. We even pre paid for the Holi menu so the restaurant had ample time to adjust the sale menu for my intolerances or they should have said they were unable to and we would have dined elsewhere. We ordered but I had no idea what was being made for me as the waiter said the chef will “do something for me”. We arrived at 3:45pm but only receive our drink at 4pm and it was not the “special cocktail included in our deal. It was a ridiculously small sized cocktail from their signature menu.

At 4:39pm our starters arrived and I was given a mediocre carrot and cucumber stick with hummus, nothing at all modified from the Holi menu. The mains took forever to arrive and at 5:15pm we received it with just 15 minutes to eat it before our immersive 30minute slot was to start. We asked a waiter who was visibly lost in his daydream whether we can go to the experience and return afterwards for our dessert. He said no as we can do it at 6pm “no problem” but we knew the website said the next slot after 5:30pm was at 8pm. We went to the front desk to again someone else and they advised us to go to it now and come back for dessert. Therefore 2 conflicting advice from 2 staff. I asked to pack my mains away as it was cold now since they brought it out after so long, and a man brought empty boxes to my table. I asked him to put the food inside.
The immersive experience has saved this review from being 1 star. We should’ve just booked that and avoided the shoddy service at the restaurant.
Once we came back to front desk the woman who greeted us prior with her mouth full, looked disgusted that we wanted to enter the restaurant and asked my friend to go back outside to wipe her face! All we asked was to use the bathroom to freshen up. Clearly she did not like the experience her restaurant offered with a “house of Holi + meal” experience if she made us feel inferior as we re entered the restaurant. Upon freshening up, we asked for a coke and waited to see a menu for our dessert. Neither came. Another 15 minutes of wasted time and we had to ask twice for 1 glass of coke. I spoke to a supervisor who offered to waiver the entire bill however we had already pre paid. He said he didn’t want us to leave upset but could not refund as we bought via a third party site! We said it was now 7pm and due to numerous delays by the staff most of which had no clue we were even there waiting to be served, it was all wholly dejecting. We felt we were ignored and a bit of an inconvenience. Apart from the man that did the food options. Half our wait for water and to take our order was shoddy if they'd have been more attentive we could have finished all 3 courses in plenty of time to then get in the pod. Considering the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived there was no excuse for us j delays. The restaurant should not offer reservation slots if they are not trained how to serve a customer.
