SquareMeal Review of Blacklock City

Silver Award

Considering the popularity of the original Blacklock in Soho, it’s no surprise that the chophouse has added to its portfolio. This City branch takes a larger form, seating 100 covers in an industrial-style basement of exposed brickwork and concrete floors with a crowd-pleasing, eclectic soundtrack.

Founder Gordon Ker has made room on the menu for some new additions, such as the tangy pig’s head on toast to start, topped with gherkins, chilli pepper and lashings of gravy. Blacklock’s signature ‘all in’ option has wisely not been messed with and remains a must-order: a perfectly cooked stack of beef, lamb and pork chops served atop crisp, herb-flecked flatbreads, which have soaked up the meat juices.

Cocktails can be found at the bulky brass bar upon entering, with sips including the Pink Lady (cider brandy, cider syrup and Prosecco) impressing, and all for just £5 each. Meanwhile, desserts add to the homely feel with vanilla cheesecake atop a crumbly biscuit base, served tableside out of a tray.

Friendly, fun staff, reasonable prices and the option to book (unlike the original) cement Blacklock City’s position as a cut above the rest – we wouldn’t be surprised to see more.

About

Blacklock City is one of four restaurants for the brand, which has its eyes on B Corp status. This was Blacklock's second offering after a hugely popular inaugral opening, and follows in the mould of its successful sibling sites.

As ever, high-quality meat is at the centre of the menu, as is a commitment from owner Gordon Ker and his team to use the whole animal across their dishes. This manifests in lesser-known cuts finding their place at the table – think things like Denver and Tri-tip steak. The added bonus? If you choose to plump for a less premium piece of meat the cost is a fraction of the price of classic big-hitters like Fillet or Sirloin.

Starters include dishes like pig’s head on toast with gravy and the ever-popular Cull Yaw crumpets. Mains are focused primarily on ribs and steaks, with the former section giving diners the choice of pork, lamb or beef skinny chops while the latter includes Rub Cap and Sixth Rib Eye. Unexpectedly, vegetarians are also catered for via mains like barbecued halloumi and coal roasted celeriac with pickled sultanas. Sides complete things with the choice of crowd-pleasers like beef dripping chips, seasonal slaw or the house gravy.

Come Sunday you’ll find the award-winning Sunday roast on the menu. Diners are given the choice of 55-day aged beef rump, Cornish lamb leg or Middlewhite pork loin served with all the trimmings (which crucially includes some very, very good gravy). A nostalgic nod to great British puds is realised in a giant ice cream sundae that was made for a photo opportunity.

Recognising its responsibility to building a more sustainable future for restaurants, Blacklock has made a commitment to attaining B Corp status. Efforts include planting a tree for every diner that eats in the restaurant as well as donating money to a homeless charity for young people for every cocktail bought.

Great service, great food

Attentive service. Great quality food. £22 per head chops and bread comes with 2 sides and some small canapés - fantastic. Only criticism would be that we got charged for some sauces we didn't order.

Good, but not great

Went to Blacklock City based on reviews, particularly relating to the All in meat plate, and did order this. The Starters that came with the platter were .... ok, I guess? Nothing special. The meat was all good, but definitely not great. The problem is also that the meat obviously goes cold whilst you're eating such a big plate as well.

The best was the vegetables! The carrots were great and the sprouts delicious. However, the reason to go to a restaurant like Blackock is for the meat and it didn't really wow us. Atmosphere is great, staff were fantastic though. Perhaps if we had gone for the individual steaks it would have been different?

Love of the flatiron

Five years is a long time in London restaurant history terms. Gourmand Gunno visited the original Blacklock site in Soho when it first opened in 2015. Since then, the venture has gone from strength to strength. The mini-empire now comprises three outlets, with more rumoured to be on the agenda. It was a pleasure then to visit the Blacklock venue in the City for a recent working lunch. Similar to Blacklock Soho having a backstory (located on the site of a former brothel), Blacklock City has historic pedigree, located in a cool basement venue (formerly an electricity substation) of a Grade II listed building. Sure, there’s the usual exposed brick and piping, but the site is nonetheless a talking point. The real reason for coming, of course, is the food. It’s a predictable, yet successful formula: lots of meat (all sustainably sourced) grilled on Blacklock’s signature flatiron. For £20/head, it is very hard to fault Blacklock’s ‘all-in’ lunchtime offering. We began with a selection of light bites, artfully presented, light in body yet piquant to taste (egg and anchovy was my favourite). Onto the main event and a platter of sizzling meat comprising beef, lamb and pork arrived at our table. Dig-in is the mantra, with the race to the bottom being of prime importance, since there reside the herb-crusted flatbreads. Not that exciting you may think, but once they have absorbed the juices of the meats, this is soggy decadence in every mouthful. Many around us were drinking cocktails (about which I heard positive things), but we stuck to wine, chosen from an inventive list. A South African Cinsault worked as a lovely foil to the earthy richness of the meat. If all this were not reason enough to visit, then note that Blacklock City – unlike its Soho sibling – can be booked in advance.

fab food, service was slacking

We had a lovely meal on Friday lunch, it was just let down by service a little, which was a little slow. We waited quite a while for food and we weren't offered pudding and had to wave a few times for the bill. We also had a 'disagreement' with our waitress - our lamb cutlets came out as starter, but we wanted them with our mains, she recultantly took them back to the kitchen, she did feel the need to tell us we had ordered them as starters (we hadn't). Perhaps it was just a one off though as usually their service is fantastic in their Soho and Shoreditch branch.

Great working lunch
The food was amazing, so much so that I order way more than I needed to, but somehow managed to finish it all. I have no complaints about the service as it was a busy lunch period, I did not find myself waiting to long to be seated or served. This was a lunch that all who attended enjoyed.

What's not to love about a big pile of meat followed by helping yourself to as much white chocolate cheesecake as your distended belly can hold? Nothing! And there's more, 10 hr ash roasted sweet potato so it goes super caramelised and sticky and they're the only people who have ever made me love kale (by smothering it in Parmesan) Work your way through the short but ever changing cocktail menu and leave full, drunk and happy (the best combination!).

Everything was excellent, Monday night and it was packed to the rafters. Service was stealthily excellent, food prompt and cocktail choices well priced and novel. Definitely tell everyone and go back!
