SquareMeal Review of Assaggetti

Set up by the man behind Knightsbridge’s tourist hub Zia Teresa and the Getti mini-chain, Assaggetti’s modern interior exudes a New York vibe, mixing statement chandeliers, bare brick and quirky mirrors with casual touches such as tins of cutlery on the tables. Shareable standouts from the extensive menu range from ‘bites’ such as  marinated salmon, meatballs, tuna tartare and ‘messy polenta’ with Gorgonzola to upmarket pizzas with toppings involving speck, Tropea onions and caponata siciliana. Mains featuring “old-fashioned red sauces” sit alongside wild mushroom risotto, goats’ cheese ravioli and beef tagliata, while the ‘chef’s selection’ set menu is music to the ears of Haymarket’s theatre crowds. The drinks list goes heavy on Italian wines, with an admirable range available by the glass and carafe; also check out the beers and Prosecco offers.

you will return again and again
A brilliant idea, why doesn't anyone else do Italian food in Spanish style tapas portions? Everything we tried was excellent and when we returned again a few days later we were recognised and given a very warm welcome and again were not disappointed with oud choices of dishes. We just ordered a couple of small dishes at a time and a few more until we were full. Great wine list too, but do ask if they have any specials not on the list. Can't wait to go back again soon.

Very nice selection of Italian tapas in the heart of London. Full size portions of pizza and pasta as well but we stuck with the smaller plates…yummy! Very convenient to Soho if you're headed in for a matinee.

I took my Mother for pre-theatre lunch on Sat 17 March. The welcome was v good and sadly it then went rapidly downhill- long waits to be served, two mains ( not the tapas) arrived with 10 mins and two chases in between. The chicken fricasse arrived on a plate with chicken in what looked like chicken soup with one lettuce leaf and half a cherry tomato- really quite strange and apparently tasted dreadful. The spaghetti ragu was fine- but freezing by the time my Mother's main arrived. The chianti – second most expensive wine on the wine list- had the astringent qualities of paint stripper. The staff were under prepared and frankly hopeless- the waitress had no idea what she was serving. The managers stood in huddles or doing paperwork. Really this place is to be avoided! The Spaghetti House up the road would have been a better choice. Huge disappointment. NDG
