SquareMeal Review of Abbey

Bronze Award

This funky late-night bar is one of the City’s bigger watering holes, though its dimensions aren’t entirely apparent as you arrive; the front is divided into several distinct areas, each with their own decorative theme, but it’s only when you reach the cantilevered stair down to the lower bar that you realise Abbey is more of a cathedral than a chapel. There’s plenty of room all around if you want to grab a pew & enjoy a 28-day aged rib eye steak, Wagyu beef burger or beer-battered haddock with tartare sauce, mushy peas and chips. Wines start at £20.50, with a limited selection offered by the glass; there are cocktails too, plus a handful of beers. Check the website for various events throughout the month, including happy hours and ping pong.

Good as usual
This restaurant became my boss' favourite location and he is now taken his colleagues for lunch on a regular basis. The food is good and prices are reasonnable.

Simply Divine!
I recently visited Abbey for the first time, with a colleague for lunch. I work very close by, but never really noticed it. It is set back a bit and the outside is a little dull. But wow, once you get inside you are greeted by smiles and beautiful interior. The layout is great, having being sat on the far right near the front window; it was very quiet nose wise, which was really un-expected for how popular the restaurant is. I tucked into their Charred Asparagus and Boccioni Risotto with Sun blazed Tomatoes, this was simply divine! The risotto has chunks of Asparagus all the way through it, unlike many I have had before where it has just been laid on top for decoration. Abbey really have a wide range of foods, my colleague had Scampi and chips, which look really tasty!! (& I am a vegetarian, that must say something). The presentation of both the dishes was very simple, but artistic, with the chips in a woven brown bowl and the scampi placed next to it, mine central on a white plate letting the beauty of the food do its trick. I really could not have matched the risotto anywhere else, it was simply remarkable. The risotto should have been £9.50 (which I would have fully paid and more!) but I paid less due to having a tastecard, which is eligible Monday – Thursday entitling 50% off the total food bill. Abbey also do a 241 offer on Monday & Tuesday Lunch times, if anyone is looking for a great meal on a tight budget! I believe even at full price Abbey is great value for money. Never Judge A Book By Its Cover! – Walk right in and tuck in to some remarkable food! I will be definitely be returning to abbey, and will recommend it to any one!
