Gussied-up by new owners Barworks (Well & Bucket, 5CC Singer Tavern, Harrild & Sons etc), this impressive Victorian boozer looks good to go for another 125 years. Restored to something like its Jack the Ripper gory glory days, the soupy-brown saloon's ornate back bar, banquettes, picture windows, belle époque flame lamps on columns and numerous other features have been retained or (in some cases) enhanced. Another big improvement is an international cast of cask ales, kegs and bottled beers: typical draughts include Magic Rock Inhaler, Tuatara Sauvinova (a Kiwi pearl), Denmark's Mikkeller Mexas Ranger and various dark brews, stouts and porters. Also on tap (at £4.20 a glass), the house Italian is one of a dozen wines to order with sourdough pizzas and heritage bar snacks – don’t miss The Griffin's great sausage rolls.
