SquareMeal Review of The George Inn Bridport

The current licensees of this attractive thatched inn/restaurant did five years at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage before striking out on their own. A dedication to all things local runs through their set-up, whether it’s real ales from Palmer’s in nearby Bridport or flour from a Dorset bakery (used for making their own bread). Expect a simple, seasonal menu of Scotch eggs, burgers and ploughman’s plus specials ranging from grilled mackerel salad with rhubarb compote to wild boar bangers and mash. The place is fiercely popular and the atmosphere is fun, while a strong programme of live music gigs, wood-fired pizza nights (Thursdays in summer) and events such as the Dorset Nettle Eating Contest help to keep it at the heart of local life. The only downside seems to be the location – right beside the thundering A35 that slices through the village.
