Set in a beautifully restored Victorian beach shelter, the Fig Tree has unrivalled views across the Bristol Channel to Somerset, Flat Holm and Steep Holm. Simple, subtly stylish interiors allow the stunning views to take centre stage, although the food is a worthy distraction. Most of the ingredients come from within 30 miles of the restaurant, but ideas are gleaned from far and wide. You could begin with an assiette of antipasti, gravadlax with sorrel cream and pickled samphire or ham hock and black pudding roulade with caramelised apple before tackling the homemade ravioli of the day or a 28-day dry-matured sirloin steak with hand-cut Maris Piper chips and roast tomatoes. There are some excellent and eclectic vegetarian choices too, while desserts might range from lavender crème brûlée to white chocolate pannacotta with poached rhubarb.
