Tate Modern’s bold new pyramid, the Switch House, is an uplifting beauty. Pity then, that the bar on Level 1 is not similarly inspirational. A pedestrian interior and tables on a terrace overlooking a windswept plaza suggest a student union. The food and drink help ameliorate the visual disappointment, but will this touristy, clattering canteen attract Londoners? Try the Tate’s own Fourpure-brewed beer, or Wylam Puffing Billy (a Northumbrian smoked bitter), among the great British craft beers and ciders on draught. Sip Spanish wine from the keg, and dine on spit-roasted free-range chicken, mighty meaty sharing platters, or veggie kebabs. Nibbles or side dishes include Padrón peppers, and Ratte potatoes with onion and smoked garlic. Locally distilled spirits, roasted coffees and freshly made pastries are also available. However, for pre-batched cocktails and a knockout London view, head to the Kitchen and Bar on Level 6 of the Boiler House building.
