Since taking over what was the much-loved Pink Olive, Kieran and Nicola Sylvester's eponymous restaurant has picked up on the offbeat quality and value that made its predecessor such a hit with students and locals alike. Located just a stroll from Bristo Square and the heart of Edinburgh’s Festival activity, this small but perfectly formed eatery has an impressive festival menu, but it's the year-round offering which is the most impressive – particularly as prices are pitched for comfort. Pay your money for smoked mackerel and lemon pâté, haggis bonbons or toasted goats’ cheese and Kalamata olive bruschetta, ahead of oriental-style confit duck, pollock and chips or wild mushroom risotto. Light lunches also bring sharing platters, deli sandwiches, superfood salads and suchlike, while desserts maintain the please-all theme with banoffi cheesecake or chocolate and orange brownie.

I recently dined at Sylvester's and I have to say I was far from impressed. The chef should be sacked and charged with attempted murder. I ordered a steak medium rare and I could have sworn I saw it jump off of my plate it was that raw. My 79 year old wife suffered from terrible food poisoning after eating the fish cake. We had even feared it was corona virus, it was that severe. The waiter was very helpful, however. He catered very well to our needs and was the standout in a mediocre restaurant. I will certainly not be returning to Sylvester's any time soon, and indefinitely if that chef remains in post.
