SquareMeal Review of Studio 5ive

Situated within the brand new Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, which is housed within the former Fountain Studios, Studio 5ive offers theatre-goers and the general public top-notch food in comfortable, contemporary surrounds.

Like the theatre, the restaurant has been given the five-star treatment from the decor to the beautifully presented dishes served up by the kitchen, perhaps with a view to challenging the preconceptions about in-house theatre restaurants. Stuffy and sub-standard this is definitely not.

Royal blue walls and velvet banquettes are offset nicely by wooden flooring, tables and chairs, while a central stage provides a home for the latest artists looking to perform their programmes of music, comedy and cabaret. Whether you’re filling up before or after a show, or just dropping by to take advantage of the polished pre-theatre menu and a spot of entertainment, you’ll find an appealing line-up of modern British dishes.

The menu here changes according to the seasons, but examples of what diners could encounter include pulled pork arancini with pickled fennel and lamb’s lettuce; baby chicken served with slow roasted mushrooms, tomatoes and tarragon gravy; and sticky toffee pudding with custard and toffee sauce. Vegetarians and vegans aren’t left out either thanks to starters such as heritage beetroot tarte Tatin with goat’s curd and hazelnut, and mains such as charred aubergine with hummus, muhammara and spiced onions.

Drinks are similarly upmarket, so whether you’re in the mood for a glass of wine, an Espresso Martini or some kind of spritz, you’ll be well looked after. Prices are what you’d expect from a restaurant with a captive audience, but unlike some other on-site establishments, the quality of the food matches up.

As the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre is just a short walk from Wembley Park station, Studio 5ive stands out as a dining destination in its own right.

Major Ruse

19 Feb 2020

Major Ruse are a hiphop influenced jazz trio with a rocky, punk edge, described by Tom Robinson as ‘a totally fantastic f*cking noise’. Armed with just a sax, a guitar and a drum kit, Major Ruse make music that takes risks, pulls on heart strings and makes you want to shake a leg! They take in everything from math rock to hip-hop, blend it up in jazz and fire it back out with groove and feeling.

Putting out their debut EP last year, they have since been putting in the hours writing new material for their first album and honing their energetic live shows.

Along the way they have played many festivals including Love Supreme, We Out Here and Manchester Jazz Festival and supported the likes of Oscar Jerome and Blue Lab Beats as well as having their latest single played on BBC 6 Music and being invited to play live on Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 Music show in December.

“What a totally fantastic noise – Paradigm is my personal record of the week by a country mile”

Georgia van Etten is a soulful, Americana driven singer songwriter and international touring artist based in London and originally hailing from Melbourne, Australia. She has wowed audiences globally from the mega Falls Festival (Australia), to headlining foremost London venues Omeara and Ronnie Scotts to famous European festivals Montreux Jazz (Switzerland), Porretta Soul (Italy), Ealing Blues (UK), Cambridge International Jazz (UK) and Jazz à Vienne (France).

"enthralling audiences around the world with her refreshing creativity and rich vocal tones"
The Telegraph, UK
Georgia recently released her debut EP Live at the Pool Studio to much critical success. Lead single ‘Take My Hand’ gained excellent airplay on BBC Radio 2, playlisted on The Blues Show and proving popular on The Jazz Show with Jamie Cullum remarking "A voice so full of texture and experience…this really blew me away when I first heard it”. Blues & Soul Magazine UK gave a rave review, declaring “Put simply, this is a damn fine EP”.

The EP release particularly sparked attention surrounding van Etten’s unique mouth trumpet impression with media giant UNILAD SOUND featuring a clip from track 'Sugar' that reached viral views and coined her the 'Human Trumpet’ with Blues & Soul Magazine UK exclaiming "Not only has this gifted performer a great vocal delivery but she plays mouth/vocal trumpet too...Here's a songstress who can definitely blow her own trumpet”.

Georgia has also written and recorded extensively with soul-electronic artist Alice Ivy who has quickly risen to fame in Australia after success with tracks 'Touch' and 'Almost Here' that feature van Etten and have gained phenomenal streams on Spotify. Together they have toured the UK and Germany and recently supported Foster The People at The Forum, Melbourne.

Widely celebrated for her authentic lyrics and clever music she proves her honest songwriting is just as fierce as her voice, “continuing to craft her music with precision, warmth and an impressive vocal quality” The AU Review, Australia.

Georgia will be performing a mix of her original material and covers that have either influenced her music or match her unique style.

Drawing inspiration from Marlene Dietrich’s iconic solo show, performed internationally during her last years in the limelight, this new cabaret is a sensational evening of song that revisits some of the Hollywood star’s most memorable numbers, including Lili Marlene, Lola, and of course Falling in Love Again.

Besides Dietrich’s most notable numbers, Groom will also reimagine classics from the Great American Songbook in the inimitable style of the woman Hemingway called “the beautiful mystery.’”

Musical direction by Jimmy Jewell

‘exudes class and excellence, it’s funny, charming - a show not to be missed!’
- BroadwayWorld
