SquareMeal Review of Reform Social and Grill at The Mandeville Hotel (afternoon tea)

Red-blooded men with a taste for Lady Grey can hold their heads (and their pinkies) up high at the Reform Social & Grill, where tea is definitely not just for the girls. This clubby venue does two versions – the ‘vintage’ and the ‘gentleman’s’, both £26.50 and both with a ‘best of British’ theme. The latter is gloriously butch, with hand-raised pork pie and mini Wagyu burgers heading the savoury selection, sticky toffee pudding and apple pie among the ‘fancies’, and a Lagavulin whisky cocktail served alongside the cup that cheers. The ‘vintage’ tea – presumably for guys and gals – includes retro cakes (Battenberg, Black Forest etc) and a ’50 shades of Earl Grey’ cocktail, while the fine leaf-tea selection features the Mandeville’s special blend, Jing Darjeeling or blackcurrant and hibiscus.

A fun twist on afternoon tea
05 May 2015
Our reason for visiting was that this was a gift to my boyfriend for Valentine's Day, so we opted for the Gentleman's menu. Overall, we were impressed. The savoury options (mini steak and snail sandwiches, fish fingers on a bed of mushy peas and sausage rolls) were tasty and a fun addition. However, I felt they could have been adapted slightly better to being served for afternoon tea, that is, smaller portions and served like the sweet options were as opposed to on a slate. The sweet options included very well made scones and more unusual After Eight macaroons and chocolate and Guiness cake. My main criticism was that we'd have preferred more of balance between savour and sweet options but perhaps that is personal taste. The Bellinis which comes as part of the package were delicious. Service was impeccable and the surroundings classy and relaxed. Also, I’m not a big tea drinker so requested a coffee instead and was given a very nice latte. I wasn’t charged extra which I thought was commendable. I wouldn't recommend it as an option for traditionalists but a great idea if you fancy something a little different. Well worth a visit.
