On Hercules Street, just off Holloway Road, Picholine is a bit of a hidden gem. This Mediterranean hotspot is well-known among locals for its brilliant food and buzzy atmosphere. Step inside (or sit out the front in the warmer months), and you'll be greeted by a simply furnished space. While it might not be the most glamorous setting ever, the real focus is the food and drink. There's a lot to try here, so we recommend visiting in a group to cover as much ground as possible.
Kick things off with a refreshing cocktail like a margarita, mojito or Aperol spritz. Sangria is also available by the jug or glass, ideal for sharing. Those celebrating might like to try the Villa Miazzi Prosecco, and there are a couple of Mediterranean whites, reds and roses to sample too. Those not drinking alcohol are catered to as well and can choose from the soft drinks, fresh lemonade or a mint spritzer.
The food here, as any Mediterranean meal should, starts with bread. There is plenty to dip it into, including a simple olive oil, hummus, baba ganoush and aioli. For something a little more warming, try the caldo verde; a Portuguese potato, spring greens and chorizo soup. If you would prefer something a little meatier, go for the char-grilled chorizo, lamb meatballs with tomato sauce, chicken gizzard, marinated quail or pan-fried chicken liver with sherry.
Don't miss out on the seafood though. Start things of with crispy baby squid, sizzling garlic prawns, grilled squid with coriander sauce, mussels with garlic and white wine or salt cod fritters with aioli. For the main event, diners can choose between rice dishes, such hearty paellas, and meatier mains, such as charcoal grilled poussin or octopus. Finish the meal with a chocolate tart laced with Pedro Ximenez sherry cream for a meal you won't soon forget.
