SquareMeal journalism scholarship 2020

As the number one guide to restaurants and bars across the whole of the UK, the team here at SquareMeal is always on the lookout for new talent. Part of our commitment to backing emerging food writers is to financially support gifted students studying either English, Journalism or Creative Writing at a British university.

Our scholarship is made up of a £1000 contribution to living costs as well as a three month summer-long paid internship, compensated at £15,000 pro rata. There’s no one thing we’re looking for, rather we want to hear from a whole host of different people who are passionate about what’s on their plate; people who know their porchetta from their Parma ham.

For more info please see below, where we have answered what we think might be your most common concerns or questions, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for there then please be in touch with one of the team. We look forward to hearing from you, good luck!

What do SquareMeal do?

We’re a restaurant and bar guide covering the whole of the UK - from the southernmost point of Cornwall to the chilliest climbs of Scotland. We pride ourselves on being an informed and independent voice in the industry, always giving truthful accounts of our experiences out and about at restaurants, pubs and bars to help guide our readers in the most authentic way possible. These reviews are widely regarded as some of the best in the UK, with even Google in agreement (we are the featured review snippets on restaurant listings surfaced on the search engine)!

As well as singular reviews we write longer lists and features that are created to act as useful guides for our readers. From the best bottomless brunch in London to the finest cheap eats in Manchester, we’re there whenever anyone has a foodie question they need answered. As we continue to grow in 2020 we’re also focusing on international expansion, with Dubai and Singapore being the first sites in our foray into international waters.

How can I apply for the SquareMeal scholarship?

First of all, you will need three months free to be able to take us up on the offer of a three month paid internship. If that works for you then please follow the steps below:

  • Attach a CV
  • Write us a review of a restaurant you’ve been to recently. It can be good or bad but must be 300 words and include points on food, drink, decor, ambiance and service
  • Write 300 words on why you would want to work for SquareMeal
  • Suggest three brief feature ideas for the website
  • Submit 300 words on what you think the most important factors for SEO are
  • Give us an idea of something you think we could change or add on the website to improve the user journey or general reader enjoyment

You university will have to be signed up as an official partner of the scheme, so please check that they are before submitting your application. Once you’ve gathered together all of the above, checked your diary for three months of free time and had your uni’s nod of approval, please apply here

Please note the deadline for submissions is the 31st January, 2020

How will I know if I’ve been successful?

This is our first year sponsoring a gifted student, but we hope to run the award annually. We are unable to reply to every submission, however fantastic you all are, and will only get back to a shortlist of top candidates. Three students will be invited to interview at our headquarters in Vauxhall in February 2020, and following that we will decide on the successful student - offering them a placement from the start of June 2020, as well as the £1000.

What will the internship look like?

We're a small, hardworking bunch who all have a deep and uncompromising love of food. We regularly have paid interns join us on a 3-6 month basis and they quickly become one of the team.

As such we won’t make you get us tea or do all our filing, instead you will be factored in as a regular member of the gang. Each day our morning starts with a news and stats meeting, where we go over yesterday’s site traffic and all pitch ideas of stories to cover. If your pitch is successful you will spend the next half hour writing up your story. Following that it’s on to a fun-filled busy day of writing or updating features, posting on social media, designing newsletters or working on one of our many special projects - which could range from helping to launch an international site to cleaning up an area of the site so that it’s all sparkling and SEO friendly.
