All The Best - Dave Hogan

Photographer to the stars, Dave ‘Hogie’ Hogan, tells us about his favourite venues & events

The Quantum of Solace premiere at Battersea Power Station was pure class. Money was no object and Daniel Craig always does it so well. The Brits are brilliant, too, and The BAFTAs are always a real luvvie fest – all ‘dahling’ and air kissing; it’s like a bunch of peacocks coming out to preen.

The opening of Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai was completely OTT but done with such style. There was £5m spent on fireworks alone and the food was the best of everything – lobster, seafood, Champagne… Kylie performed and Robert De Niro, Charlize Theron, Janet Jackson and Lily Allen were all there.

BEST Venue
I think The O2 has a real sense of occasion. They’ve really turned it around. You can chill out, have a nice meal, a few drinks and then watch a gig – it’s the whole experience.

U2 know their stuff and always deliver. At the first Live Aid in 1985, I photographed Bono grabbing a person from the crowd, and the reaction from the fans was incredible. Being on stage with the band at big gigs like that is amazing.

Live Aid was probably the most defining moment in my career. I take a lot more satisfaction from giving than from taking, so working specifically for a charity was great. As one of the official photographers, I had an access all areas backstage pass so could watch the performances from the stage.

My most memorable photo was of course the one of Madonna and Britney kissing at the MTV Video Music Awards, but the ones I am most proud of are the ones I have taken in Africa and of Nelson Mandela.

I think The Sanderson in London has a really nice atmosphere but the W Hotels are my favourites in the world – great attention to detail, very elegant and glamorous.

My favourite party food has to be seafood – lobster, scallops things like that. Sketch in London does great food and canapés.

BEST of the Best
If I could organise the ultimate party – no expense spared – I would book one of the Ramsay restaurants and get them to put on something really special. I’d invite all my friends and family.

Dave Hogan is this country’s most respected showbiz photographer. Name any event and he’s probably ‘been there, shot that’ – just don’t mistake this guy for paparazzi. ‘Hogie’, who is friends with just about everyone, would never turn up uninvited. Armed with backstage passes and his trusty Sony A900, he has attended hundreds of exclusive events and captured iconic images of the world’s biggest stars – many of which are featured in Access all Areas, a new book showcasing Hogan’s 25-year career, published by Green Umbrella Publishing.
