Dependably on-point, peripatetic pop-up meisters Night Tales bring their laidback brand of fun times to Hackney at their new permanent base, NT’s. A handy canteen for neighbour Netil House’s numerous indie creatives, the bar occupies one entire floor of a shabby 1960s building with gritty, urban views. Grungy Brooklyn boho décor, commuter trains regularly rattling across an adjacent viaduct and 70s Soul Train anthems cranked up loud, NT’s feels like a cool NYC open-plan loft circa Sly and the Family Stone. Writ large in pink neon, ‘LIQUOR’ is what you’re here for. Top calls include Lychee Gimlet, mezcal maraschino and Aperol highball, Chasing Tales, and classic gin Prohibition cocktail Southside – here flavoured with coriander. An Angostura 1919 rum and Laphroaig Manhattan billed as The Con Man is, like the others here, honestly priced and on-the-money at £9.50. Order wine (from £20) and Meantime and Brewdog ales with street food. Current kitchen honours fall to Morty & Bob’s: fried chicken with spicy Vietna’mayo; mushroom and truffle grilled cheese sarnie; sweet and sour dressed kale, and sprout and toasted almond parmesan-topped slaw all pass muster. NT’s also opens for breakfast from 9am and offers bottomless weekend brunch, as well as lunchtime salads, croques and rarebits, served until 4pm.
