The Culpeper pub launches

culpeper.jpgThe team behind pizza pop-up Forzawin is to open the Culpeper pub in Spitalfields today.

It takes the place of The Princess Alice pub on Commercial Street, and will be open all day from breakfast through to dinner. Sunday roasts and weekend brunches will also be on the menu.

Sandy Jarvis, who was previously at Terroirs, has been appointed head chef, and has put together a menu that blends traditional British pub classics with Italian, Mediterranean and North African influences.

Bringing an extra dimension to proceedings, the pub’s roof has been turned into a vegetable plot (pictured above), and every single dish on the menu will feature at least one item grown on-site.

Dinner options include deep-fried pig’s head with dandelion leaves and pickled walnuts, beef and mushroom pie with blue cheese, fish and chips, and chimichurri pork chop. Puddings include a chocolate and walnut brownie with salted caramel and honeycomb, and doughnuts with English strawberries. Breakfast ranges from harissa eggs with mint yoghurt to a full English.

Alex Orwin, previously of Jonathan Downey's Rushmore Group, is in charge of the bar, which specialises in cocktails featuring herbs from the roof.

Picnics on the roof are planned from mid-July, while spare rooms in the pub are also in the process of being converted into accommodation.
