If you follow us on Twitter, you’ll know at least one new restaurant opens in London every week, but this week there are four. We guess everyone’s feeling pumped after a relaxing summer break – our stomachs are certainly prepped and ready. Read all about this week’s openings here, as well as what’s coming up next in our Coming Soon selection.
Beef & Brew, Kentish Town (above)
What: Eschewing posh beef cuts for cheaper (and arguably more flavoursome) flesh, this north London offering promises hanger steak instead of loin and flat iron over fillet, cooked to show them off in all their glory. The kitchen’s in capable hands: Angela Hartnett (Murano and Café Murano) alumni Jessica Simmons is head chef and co-owner. Find relief from meat sweats with cold craft beer, wines and cocktails.
When: Originally due to open last week, extra building work means it should be open by tomorrow or Thursday
Where: 323 Kentish Town Road, NW5 2TJ
Bernardi’s, Marylebone (above)
What: The brainchild of Italian-Aussie brothers Gabriel and Marcello Bernardi (formerly of the Cubitt House Group and behind recent opening Percy & Founders), this Italian all-dayer features a menu cooked up by Roux Scholarship finalist Sabrina Gidda. Expect rose veal tonnato, white peaches with burrata and almonds, on-trend rabbit ragu, and larger dishes including salted cod with white polenta and sorrel. It’s safe to say this part of Marble Arch is set to become a bit more dolce.
When: Soft launch from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 September, with 50% off food
Where: 62 Seymour Street, W1H 5BN
DF Mexico, Fitzrovia (above)
What: The first DF Mexico in Shoreditch (from the guys behind Wahaca) was an ‘experimental residency’ and this second Fitzrovia branch is proof that it paid off. Named after Distrito Federal (aka Mexico City), expect NYC tortas (a toasted brioche sandwich) with avocado and cucumber pickle, steak tacos, four-hour slow-roasted ‘carne con chile’ and panko-crumbed cod tacos. Oh, and frozen Margaritas. Need we say more?
When: Thursday 17 September
Where: 28-29 Tottenham Court Road, W1T 1BU
And finally…
Black Axe Mangal, Highbury
What: When you take a guy who’s worked at a pop-up restaurant in a nightclub in Copenhagen (does it get any cooler?), St John Bread & Wine (it just did), and a Turkish kebab joint (just yum), the result is going to be pretty cool. Step forward Lee Tiernan, who has deconstructed the 4am staple and constructed his own versions for hungry Highbury-ites. Not a pitta on the premises, envelopes of bread are made on-site, as are the sauces, marinades and pickles. Get stuck into flatbreads stuffed with spiced lamb offal, kebabs of anchovy-crusted pork jowl and suckling kid adana. Obviously you can takeaway, but if eating in there are plenty of beers and wines from which to choose, as well as a tidy cocktail list.
When: Any day now… Originally due to open today, the restaurant has been delayed by what could be roadworks (according to Twitter), so watch this space.
Where: 156 Canonbury Road, N1 2UP
