Hixter Bankside opens tomorrow

Mark Hix 2014 - Mark081_-_Charlotte_Anderson.jpgMark Hix (pictured right) is set to launch his second Hixter restaurant tomorrow, with plans to open more sites from 2015.

This latest opening brings the chicken-or-steak concept to Bankside and it is the celebrity chef and restaurateur’s seventh London restaurant and his first south of the river. It follows in the footsteps of Tramshed in Shoreditch and the original Hixter in Devonshire Square near Liverpool Street, combining specially-commissioned art with the option of either whole roast chickens or Himalayan-salt-cured steaks for main courses.

hixter-chicken.jpgHixter sits with restaurants such as Burger & Lobster and Beast in having a concept built around just two main ingredients, although the menu here does expand to variations such as griddled piri-piri chicken and herb-roasted chateaubriand as well as the straight-up versions.

The 140-seat restaurant close to Tate Modern is contained within an old Victorian tin box printing factory and divided into two separate dining rooms flanked by a glass-fronted kitchen. Neon signage has been designed by leading artist and friend of Hix, Tracey Emin. ‘There will also be a pretty large Hixter_Restaurant_2013_1.jpgpiece from artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster that will make people look up,’ Hix divulged. ‘We like to make people look up,’ he said.

Hixter Bankside will also contain a third Mark’s Bar in its basement. This will be similar to the other two branches in Soho and the City, offering cocktails designed by mixologist Nick Strangeway as well as food in the form of Hix’s ‘bar snax’ menu. ‘It will be a great bar and events space with a 2am licence. We are already looking into having a resident DJ night every week,’ Hix told us.

More Hixter restaurants are on the cards after this one, and Hix confirmed that he wants ‘to grow the brand and expand the chicken and steak concept’. ‘We’re always looking for sites that offer something unique. We are close to conclusion on another site that would open in early 2015 if successful, but we are focusing very much on the opening of Hixter in Bankside for now,’ he said.
