The Clink restaurant launches in Brixton Prison today, giving
Londoners the opportunity to dine behind bars.
The opening follows in the footsteps of Clink restaurants in prisons in Surrey and Cardiff, and will be almost entirely staffed by prisoners. The Clink is a charity which works to help inmates
nearing the end of their sentence gain the skills needed to find work upon release, particularly in the hospitality industry.
The ultimate goal of the charity is reduce reoffending rates, which currently stand at nearly 50%. As well as training in the restaurant, prisoners on the scheme are allocated a mentor to help them
towards employment within the hospitality sector and to integrate back into society. The Brixton opening is part of the charity’s ambitious plan to have 10 training restaurants up and running by
2017.
The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, serving a modern British menu. No walk-ins are allowed as security processes require an online booking form to be completed, and for the same reason
mobile phones must be left at the door. Don’t expect to see any Instagrams of the food…
