If you thought the Edinburgh Fringe experience was just about belly laughs, then think again: the city’s thriving restaurant scene is second only to London in terms of quality and diversity, so by the end of the Festival that belly of yours should be very happy indeed.

Edinburgh Festival Scotland Summer 2015

To experience Edinburgh’s top-drawer dining destinations, book ahead: tables at Scottish stars such as Tom Kitchin’s ‘from nature to plate’ flagship, Mark Greenaway’s gastronomic game-changer, and seafood stunner Ondine, with its marvellous wraparound views of the city’s landmarks, are always in demand. More casual venues will also be packed: three of the best are Kitchin’s Scran & Scallie gastropub, the elegant yet unstuffy Field, and Timberyard – housed, fittingly enough for The Fringe, in a former prop warehouse. Or, for a taste of London outside the capital, try the Galvin brothers’ super-fancy Edinburgh outposts in the Caledonian Hotel, Galvin Brasserie de Luxe and The Pompadour.

Remember that not all restaurants are open during the Festival (4-28 August), so call ahead – and allow plenty of extra time to do battle with the crowds and soak up the unique atmosphere on the streets en route to your table!
