Event review – Artist & Manager Awards 2012
Troxy hosts the second annual Artist & Manager Awards on Tuesday 27 November.
THE EVENT: the second annual Artist & Manager Awards, which was co-organised by the Music Managers Forum (MMF) and Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and presented by Shaun Keaveny, host of 6 Music’s breakfast show.
THE VENUE: east London’s art deco Troxy. The reception and awards were held in the Grand Hall, while the Upper Circle
was used for non-dining guests to ensure that up and coming artists and managers were also able to attend.
THE FOOD: to start, we were served a selection of canapés, including honey glazed mini Old Spot sausages; mini Yorkshire puddings with roast beef and horseradish cream; yellowfin tuna cakes;
and chicken satay skewers. This was followed by a sit-down dinner in the Grand Hall, which was unveiled from behind curtains after the drinks reception. We tucked into a 28-day dry aged steak with
triple cooked chips and roasted cherry tomatoes, while a citrus trio of lemon tart, orange polenta cake and spiced mandarin shot rounded off the meal.
TO DRINK: we were greeted with Jack Daniels cocktails and glasses of Champagne, while bottles of red and white wine – supplied by Heritage Wines – were waiting on the table as guests sat
down to dinner.
WE LOVED: the hidden two-tiered staging when the first of two live bands, Tribes, were revealed from behind the main stage projection screen. We also loved the free Spotify Premium account
gift cards, which we found hidden inside our programmes.
THE TALKING POINT: alongside the traditional friendly arguments over who would win the awards, talk also turned to the recent news that Troxy will be hosting the NME Awards in 2013, while
rumours abounded as to whether Kylie Minogue really was in the building (she was!)
ON THE GUEST LIST: a 600-strong audience of music-industry professionals, including AMG, EMI, Google, 3A Entertainment, Live Nation, Quest Management and U K Ronfrom. They were joined by
artists and other record labels, managers, radio DJs, PRs, music journalists, MMF and FAC members and show promoters. Pioneer Award winner Amanda Palmer also made an appearance via a life-sized
video link-up screen on stage.
THE SPONSORS: Spotify, Jack Daniels, Clear Sound & Vision, SESAC, PPL, Sound Moves, Robertson Taylor and Harris & Trotter LLP.
THE WINNERS: Spotify Artist & Management Grant – Pale Seas; Breakthrough Artist – Madeon; Breakthrough Manager – Owain Davies (Ben Howard); The Pioneer Award – Amanda Palmer; Industry
Champion – Zane Lowe; Manager Of The Year – Sam Eldridge (Plan B); Artist Of The Year – Plan B; Peter Grant Manager Award – Terry Blamey (Kylie Minogue).
