SquareMeal Review of Metro Garden Restaurant and Bar

While neighbouring establishments pump up the volume & morph into clubs at night, Metro continues to be a happy, chilled & laid-back haven. This long-established, civilised bar-restaurant competes well with the many local eating & drinking venues. Its barmen are perfectly capable of making cocktails, but the emphasis is on wine & beer. Diners should walk through the slightly scruffy bar area into the all-weather twinkly garden for the most romantic tables, & order from a modern, globally influenced menu. For best results, don’t tax the chef too much – pan-fried salmon or steak is likely to be better than cauliflower, aubergine & bean korma; pizzas & salads are great fall-back options. The second, ‘secret’, garden, open to the elements, hosts grown-up barbecues & is ideal for private summer parties.

Such a cute garden out the back with fairy lights and comfy seating. Staff were really friendly and helpful, moving tables round to accommodate everyone. Food was delicious and we had a truly enjoyable evening. Will definitely be visiting again.

I love this restaurant. Great for a romantic meal for two or a sophisticated and fabulous girls' meal out. The garden, bedecked with twinkly lights, is gorgeous and atmospheric and just a little bit magical. The atmosphere is relaxed and cheerful with the service similar but at the same time attentive. Food is delicious and of high quality. Dessert menu a little short and unimaginative but then this probably ensures the high quality. Literally a stone's throw from the tube. The only downside is that it always comes out a bit pricey. Not sure why. Maybe it's the mark-up on the wine (or is the bread extra-haven't checked?) but I always end up paying a little bit more than I thought! A fabulous treat though. Have been twice and will be going again.

What a great find! I just love this beautiful garden restaurant in the middle of Clapham! We had a fabulous time dining at the Metro and loved the ambiance in the secret garden. It has an almost magical atmosphere dining under the fairy lights in all the greenery. There are big comfy couches in the garden which make it a great place to relax with friends for a fun night out. I thoroughly enjoyed my appetizer and the main was even better! What a refreshing place to be! I can't recommend the Metro more highly. But don't take my word come see for yourself. It's one of Clapham's hidden gems.

What a treat! Friendly staff, great atmosphere, and exceptional food are in abundance at Metro. Walking through the front doors, we were greeted and led to our table, which was situated in what could have been from a page in a romantic novel. The plants, twinkly lights and garden view are incredible dining surroundings. And the staff were right on when recommending the right wine to go with dinner. We will definitely go back to experience this again, and try more of the great food and desserts!

The problem with this place is that nobody seems to be in charge of it. We had badly prepared and barely edible squid. This was followed by two meals, one was good, the other was swimmng in cream and oil and made me feel a bit sick. Puddings were OK but not great. Service was friendly but staff really didn't have time or were not wonderfully attentive. Customers were told there weren't tables when very clearly were tables. Customers were not efficiently handled by the person greeting them. As we left, we saw a group which had waited for a table (for drinks and snacks only). They had left the Metro and were in another restaurant. The gents toilets had an overflowing urinal. (The only urinal) Its been a long time since we were last there, but this place has gone down hill and isn't any longer the sort of place you would go to have a ‘nice’ meal. A real shame.

We've just moved to Clapham from north London and our friends took us to Metro on Saturday night. You could never tell from the outside how pretty it is at the back, all the twinkly lights. The food was really really good and the wine the waiter recommended was so good we drank three bottles! A real south London gem, we'll be back.
